National HS federation: expect a delay for football
Football on a good day is high risk.
Under the current circumstances, the risk grows.
So the National Federation of High Schools said Tuesday in releasing guidelines for the resumption of sports that high school football starting on time is extremely doubtful, short of colossal breakthroughs in treatment of the coronavirus.
Football, wrestling, boys lacrosse, and competitive cheer all were judged as higher risk “sports that involve close, sustained contact between participants, lack of significant protective barriers, and high probability that respiratory particles will be transmitted between participants.’’
Some of the report is familiar as far as concerns about cleaning and sanitizing, etc., and didn’t take a specific stand on a coach, player, or team official testing positive after the start of workouts or practices.
It pointed out the possibility of another major outbreak this fall and/or winter in some geographic areas and that states should be prepared for closings and interruptions as well as the possibility of isolation..
The report noted priorities in leading up to the return of activity: preseason conditioning, screenings, limiting the size of meetings, distancing, facility and equipment cleaning, hydration, student-athlete hygiene, among other things.
‘’Until a cure, vaccine or very effective treatment is readily available, or so-called ‘herd immunity’ is confidently reached, social distancing and other preventive measures such as face covering will be a ‘new normal’ if workouts, practices and contests are to continue,” it said.
