Former Jones County football standout dies

Stacy Patterson, who went from Gray to Colorado to play football, died unexpectedly Saturday in Denver.

He was 46. The cause of death is being investigated by the coroner.

New head coach Karl Dorrell was a Colorado assistant and recruited Patterson for then-head coach Bill McCartney.

Patterson graduated from Jones County in 1993, earning all-state honors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 1992 on the offensive line despite the Greyhounds going only 3-6-1 under longtime head coach John “Bubba” Williams.

Patterson was one of three players to win the team’s Hale Irwin Award as the top rising sophomore, in 1995

He lettered in 1995 and 1996 for the Buffaloes, at defensive tackle, as one of only two players from Georgia to play for Colorado since at least 1973 when the school began tracking such info.

The Buffs went 10-2 in each of those two seasons as Rick Neuheisel took over for McCartney.

After graduation, Patterson made Colorado his home and was an assistant coach at Standley Lake High in Westminster while also working in the psychiatric and medical areas.

He was a mental health counselor at Centennial Peaks Hospital in Arvada, Colo. at the time of his death.
