Wrestlers from Veterans, Perry, and West Laurens take GHSA state wrestling titles

Wrestlers from Veterans, Perry, and West Laurens take GHSA state wrestling titles

Competitors from Perry and West Laurens were able to repeat as champions on Saturday in the GHSA traditional wrestling state tournament at the Macon Coliseum, with three more Central Georgians winning individual titles.

And others turned championship-match defeats last year into titles this year.

Austin Thiel repeated as a Class 4A champ, at 106 last year, by taking the 113 title this year, winning 6-2 over Northwest Whitfield’s Victor Pineda.

Chase Horne of West Laurens won last year at 220, and repeated in the same weight class, this time with a 12-0 win over Madison County’s Hamilton Cooper.

Veterans’ Julian Farber avenged last year’s championship loss by topping Caleb Jones of Woodland-Cartersville 7-2 in Class 5A 132.

Brent Carr did the same thing in 4A 182, the West Laurens standout winning by fall this year after falling 14-11 at 170 last year.

And Zeke Taylor of Perry joined the revenging group. He was pinned in 3:14 at 195 a year ago, but came back to win 4-3 over Chase Humble of Northwest Whitfield.

Veterans’ Francis Morrissey’s attempt to repeat came up short in a tough sudden-victory loss to Caleb Henson of Woodland-Cartersville in 5A’s 145.

Veterans’ Kevin Reynolds, West Laurens’ Greyson Clark and Caden Snell, Dodge County’s Javon McNeal, and the Stratford duo of Hunter Hogan and Kieran MacKinnon battled back to win their matches and take third place.

All three girls’ representatives from Central Georgia came up short in their championships.

In team scoring, Veterans finished third in 5A with 161 points, behind Woodland-Cartersville (210) and Buford (179). West Laurens and Perry were 3-4 in 4A, the Raiders at 117 points and Panthers at 108. Woodward Academy was first (177) and Gilmer second (151.5).
