Callaway, Marist, Lee County take state titles
Callaway survives Fitzgerald rallies
Callaway’s 22-10 fourth-quarter lead lasted less than a minute, Fitzgerald pulling within five with 1:38 left. The Purple Hurricane got the ball back—thanks to saving timeouts – on their 16 with 50 seconds left. A penalty on fourth and 9 kept them alive and another pushed them past midfield, but a heave from the 42 was picked off to seal it.
Safety, and a strong fourth quarter lift Marist
Marist, which led 14-0 after eight minutes, was tied but got a safety midway through the third for the lead, and took a two-possession lead a minute into the fourth, sealing it with 5:45 left. Marist won despite being outgained 209-199, Jefferson fumbling twice and throwing an interception among its four pass attempts.
The Wolves got a 26-yard field goal in OT on their first possession. Lee County had a first and goal at the 3, but fumbled and Buford recovered. Each team answered every score by the other one, tying it at 7, 14, 21, 24, and 31. The Wolves tied it with 46 seconds left on a 9-play, 65-yard drive.
