Last week’s roundup
A second-down 27-yard field goal by Caden Camp with five seconds left gave Perry its first region title since 1959. The field goal call was debatable, both teams reacting as if it had missed and the official not being directly under the upright. Here’s game video from the Perry Panther Football Network with the field goal at 1:41.00. Head coach Jessie Hicks told the Milledgeville Union-Recorder he’ll file a report with the GHSA. Both teams are at home next week, Perry against Westover and Baldwin against Thomas County Central. Baldwin led 14-7, but Perry tied it on a nice 19-yard catch-and-run by Dakarai Anderson with 75 seconds left in the first half. A double reverse pass got Baldwin inside the 10, but the Braves went backwards, on penalties and Perry defense, and the half ended with an incomplete pass on fourth and goal at the 40.
The Panther D blocked a field goal with less than five minutes left in the third quarter, and Perry took a 20-14 lead on Lane Rucker’s pass to Brantley Gibson – who made a circus catch in quality coverage – from 15 yards out with less than minute to go in the third. Baldwin tied it on Jeramiyah Scott’s run a few minutes into the fourth quarter.
Howard (3-4/1-3) 53, Spalding (1-9/1-5) 30
The Huskies finished off a rugged season with a rout, and their highest point total since beating Central 54-19 early last season. The Huskies led 29-17 at halftime, getting first-half touchdown runs from Nazir Berry, Dawson Skinner, and two from Julian Jones, plus a field goal.
West Laurens (5-4/4-2) 47, Westside (5-4/3-3) 26
The Raiders take third place and the Seminoles fourth, and both are on the road. West Laurens visits Cairo and Westside is at Bainbridge. A 21-0 third quarter put the Raiders in control, West Laurens expanding on a 20-13 halftime lead. Jacob Holsey returned a fumble nearly 50 yards midway through the third to get the Raiders going. James Boston and Caden Snell added long TD runs in the final two minutes. It was the most points given up by Westside since Peach County rolled 68-21 in last year’s regular-season finale. The Raiders broke a six-game losing streak to the Seminoles.
Class 3A
Americus-Sumter (1-7/1-5) at Mary Persons (4-5/2-4), cancelled
Central (5-3/5-1) at No. 3 Peach County (7-1/6-0), cancelled
Central hosts Liberty County, and Peach County welcomes Johnson-Savannah
Upson-Lee (5-5/3-4) 28, Jackson (4-5/3-4) 14
The Knights get the fourth playoff spot in Region 2 by winning and holding Jackson – which was in fourth alone to start the game – to less than 23 points. Upson-Lee travels to Southeast Bulloch. The Knights broke a three-game losing streak with the must-win win for their third playoff trip in a row and fifth in the last six years, the program’s second-best stretch since the first season in 1992. Jackson ate up almost half of the first quarter with a scoring drive, but Upson-Lee answered on Jake Davis’ short TD run. Milique Smith went nearly 50 yards to put the Knights on top early in the second quarter. He added a short run near the end of the half, then caught a medium-long TD pass from Davis for a three-touchdown lead early in the third quarter. Jackson got a long, long scoring pass midway through the third, but the Knights defense came up big the rest of the way to seal the playoff trip.
Class AA
Northeast (7-2/5-1) 28, Lamar County (4-6/2-4) 14
The second-seeded Raiders led from the start, and will be at home against Toombs County. Northeast got short scoring runs late in the first, midway through the second and third quarters for a 20-0 lead. A 73-yard run from CJ Allen pulled the host Trojans to within 20-7 early in the fourth, and then each team scored in the final 2:07.
Putnam County (9-1/6-1) 28, Butler (4-5/2-5) 20
The War Eagles held on to keep second place, and they’ll host Early County. Putnam County last won nine games in the regular season in 2001. They’ve given up 56 points this season.
Southwest (1-5/0-4) at Dodge County (5-3/4-1), cancelled

GMC sealed the third seed from Region 7-A Public, and travels to Region 6 runner-up Gordon Lee. The Bulldogs haven’t had a winning overall and region season since 1993, and this is the first above-.500 region record since 2002. The Bulldogs overcame a 13-3 halftime deficit.
No. 6 Macon County (8-1/7-0) 19, No. 8 Chattahoochee County (8-1/6-1) 12
The Bulldogs take the Region 5-A Public championship, and will host Social Circle. The Panthers led 12-0 after one, and were up 12-10 at halftime. Davion Clark’s short TD run late in the third quarter put the Bulldogs on top. They were driving and fumbled deep in Panther territory, and Chattahoochee County recovered only to cough up a safety in the final minute of the third quarter. Macon County’s defense then came up with the fourth-quarter shutout.
Hancock Central (6-0/5-0) 76, Crawford County (0-10/0-5) 7
Hancock Central cruised to finish the regular season undefeated, and will host BEST Academy. The Bulldogs set a program record with 76 points, as well as recording their largest margin of victory.
Stratford (7-2/4-1) 35, Deerfield-Windsor (2-8/0-5) 0
The Eagles are tied with FPD and Mount de Sales, but get the third seed. They’ll head west to Brookstone. Stratford made a bit of a playoff statement as a third seed, leading 14-0 after one and 28-0 at halftime. Stratford beat D-W 34-0 in the 2013 GISA Class AAA semifinals.

It’s FPD’s first – shared or outright – region title since joining the GHSA. The Vikings led 28-7 at halftime, with two touchdowns each from Matthew Hurt and Parker Ingram. Hurt finished with 110 yards on 18 carries. Ingram passed for 203 yards, with nine receivers catching passes. It was the Vikings’ first 40-point win since 47-0 over Mount de Sales in 2016.
Johnson County (8-2/6-2) 40, Hawkinsville (3-7/2-6) 20

Luke Haley went 47 yards with just over two minutes left in the game to put Gatewood back on top of a back-and-forth game. Gatewood trailed 18-16 at halftime, and the teams were scoreless in the third quarter.
