Saturday’s Peach State College Football

Mercer on the road and on TV

The second game of Mercer’s fall season is a notable one, the Bears traveling to one of the more idyllic settings in college football to face one of the more idyllic teams in college football.

Mercer visits Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y., just north of New York City, at noon. The game will be on CBS Sports Network (328 on Cox).

Army is 5-1, the lone loss 24-10 to No. 14 Cincinnati. The Black Knights popped Abilene Christian 55-23 on Oct. 3. Mercer hosts Abilene Christian next Saturday.

Mercer is 0-1, and hasn’t played since giving Jacksonville State a 34-28 battle on Oct. 10

Army has a Central Georgian in freshman cornerback Daelan Smith of Fort Valley, one of nearly 30 Georgians on the roster. He has yet to play this season.

Army head coach Jeff Monken is a regular visitor to Macon as a yearly speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club. He’s set to be in town on Nov. 23.

Around/about Central Georgia

Henley four under and 10 back at Zozo

Hopes for momentum from a quality CJ Cup tournament to carry over a week later are still alive – barely – for Russell Henley.

The Stratford grad followed a 4 under with an even par, and is 10 shots back after two rounds of the Zozo Championship in Thousand Oaks, Cal.

Justin Thomas has the lead, one shot up on Dylan frittelli and Lanto Griffin.

Henley started off well enough Friday, with a birdie and eight pars on the first nine (back nine), only to hiccup through three bogeys and two birdies on the second nine (front nine).

He had five birdies and two bogeys on Thursday.

Henley is tied for 57th with, among others, Rory McIlroy, and is one shot ahead of Xander Schauffele.
