Westfield takes lead over John Milledge in GISA final
The Hornets certainly got off to a huge start in the GISA AAA final series in Dublin.
Westfieldâs Sydney Langdon was on point in the circle, striking out 11 and throwing a one-hitter in the Hornetsâ 5-0 win over John Milledge.
Westfield got all it needed with three runs in the third, with some two-out power.
Marena Knowles belted a two-run homer, followed four pitches later by a solo shot from Emma Williams. The Hornets added two in the sixth on a walk, double, walk, fielderâs choice, and error.
Williams had two hits and two runs.
Westfield won the season series 14-4 and 4-0, and topped John Milledge 12-4 and 3-1 in last yearâs championship series.
Game 2 is Saturday at 1 p.m.
Amercians faring well at Mercer Tennis Classic
A day after a struggle, Varvara Lepchenko had a little easier time at the Mercer Tennis Classic.
The former tournament champ had little trouble with Katie Volynets, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Top seed Misaki Doi had a battle with Cepede Royg, losing the first set 7-6 (8-5), but coming back with 7-6 and 6-1 wins to advance.
Sachia Vickery sent out fifth seeded Ann Li 6-4, 6-3, leaving only two seeds left, Doi and sixth-seeded Marta Kostyuk. Her reward is to face Lepchenko next.
The singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals are Friday.
