W-Callaway Gardens Invite, Mercer fifth after two rounds
Main action ready to go at Mercer Tennis Classic
The top seed among qualifiers and a former champion are out, but another former champion survive to make the main draw of the Mercer Tennis Classic.
Varvara Lepchenko advanced through the qualifying round and lead the eight from that draw into the main event. But Genie Bouchard and Kayla Day are done.
Bouchard was in a tough match against Katie Volynets, down 6-4 and trailing 3-0 in the second set before having to retire with an injury.
Day was handled by Maria Camila Osorio Serrano 6-3, 6-2.
Action in the 32-player main draw and 16-team doubles draw gets underway Wednesday morning at John Drew Smith Tennis Center.
