This week's Central Georgia high school football scouting reports

Class 6A

Northside at Richmond Hill

The Wildcats of 2-6A are 2-1, with a quality loss to Ware County. Ashaud Roberson gets 131 yards a game. The suspense for Northside is how it responds to last week’s crushing by Warner Robins.

Class 5A

Houston County at Warner Robins

For the first time in a long time, the Bears are a struggling passing team: they haven’t cracked 100 yards yet. That’ll have to change against one of the top defenses in the state regardless of class. And the Warner Robins offense is getting 217.7 on the ground and 223.3 through the air.

Class 4A

ACE at Rutland, Henderson

The Hurricanes are maybe a half-dozen plays and even average red-zone success away from 1-1, if not 2-0. The Gryphons have given up 85 points in two loses to A/Private teams.

Howard at Effingham County

The 1-2 6A Rebels have scored one touchdown in their last two games, losses. Howard is physical, and brings some balance on offense with QB Dawson Skinner and rushers Dajon Skinner and Gerraud Pertillo.

Veterans, vs. Perry, Freedom Field

Veterans is 1-0 in the Houston County Sweepstakes and Perry is 0-1. The Warhawks have won the last two, 31-24 and 13-3.

Class 3A

Central at Americus-Sumter

The Chargers open 2-3A play on the road against and 0-2 team that’s been outscored 54-10.

Mary Persons at Peach County, 8 p.m.

Both teams are young, but it’s shown more with Mary Persons than Peach County so far. The two are pretty familiar with each other, and it’s been a region-like non-region game. Now, it counts a bit more.

Upson-Lee at Pike County

The Knights are plus-19 in scoring, the Pirates are minus-30 in scoring. They’re not far apart, but have only played three times, U-L up 3-1, 78-7 the last two meetings (2014-15). Detravious Mathis has 512 yards rushing for the Knights.

Class AA

Dodge County at Whitfield Academy, Saturday, 2 p.m.

It’s a game that was recently scheduled. The Wolfpack are 1-2 against two Class A Private and a AA opponent. Dodge County has been off since Sept. 11, and has a road trip before region play starts next week.

Jasper County/Monticello at Greene County

Both teams seek their first wins.

Monroe at Northeast, Thompson

It’s the season opener for Monroe, located in longtime COVID hotspot Albany. The Tornadoes went 4-7 last year, and is 5-0 against the Raiders, but the teams haven’t played since 2011.

Washington County at Evans

Evans is a 6A team that is 3-1, the wins all against winless 3A teams. The Golden Hawks may have a full complement of players and coaches for the first time all year.

Southwest at Westside, Ed DeFore

Southwest hasn’t been 2-0 since 2009. Westside is 0-2 for the first time in program history. The Seminoles are 4-5 against Bibb County public schools, and have never lost to said opponents twice in one season.

Westside-Augusta at Putnam County

The War Eagles look to go 4-0 for the first time since 1994, and win the region opener for the first time since beating Monticello 14-7 in 2015.

Class A

Creekside Christian at Wilkinson County

The Warriors welcome a GISA 3A team that’s 3-0 – including a forfeit and romp over GMC - to town.

FPD at Calvary Day

The Cavs are 2-2, off a 34-0 loss to 7-A/Private North Cobb Christian. The two wins are over GISA programs. FPD let a nice road win slip away last week, and is likely to take it out on Calvary Day.

GMC at Hancock Central

In this battle of Bulldogs, Hancock Central leads the series 7-3.

Greenville at Taylor County

The eighth-ranked Vikings have a ranked scalp, and now face a 1-2 team that’s given up 114 points.

Macon County at Central Talbotton

Macon County has won the last two meetings, 2016-17, by 62-0 and 59-6. The Bulldogs last 3-0 start? All the way back to 2001.

Montgomery County at Hawkinsville

A nice 4-A/Public showdown between the 2-1 Red Devils and 2-0 Eagles, both 1-0 in region play. Hawkinsville has to slow down an offense averaging 346.5 yards a game to go 3-1 for the first time since 2016.

Mount Paran at Stratford

The visiting Eagles haven’t been 0-3 since 2012. The host Eagles haven’t played since Sept. 11, a 21-17 winnable loss to Georgia Walton.

Savannah Country Day at Tattnall

SCD is 0-2, against GISA AAA and Class A public, by a 67-9 margin. The Trojans haven’t been challenged since the opener, outscoring ACE and Deerfield-Windsor 82-7.

Swainsboro at Dublin

The Tigers have grinded to a 2-2 record despite averaging less than 200 yards offense a game. The Irish haven’t played in awhile, and may struggle a little bit early. Dublin leads the series 43-24-2, winning the past two years 20-13 and 35-13.

Terrell County at Crawford County

Terrell County has one game down, a 20-18 loss to Atkinson County on Sept. 18. The Eagles come back down to normal scheduling after losing 66-0 to 6A power Lee County and a week off.

GISA/GAPPS

John Milledge at Pinewood

The Trojans have given up 20 points, and are off an impressive win over GHSA foe Savannah Christian, on the road.

Robert Toombs at Piedmont

The 3-0 Cougars, under then-head coach Rhett Farmer, last went 4-0 in 2011 when they finished 13-0 and with a state title.

Southland at Westfield

It’s homecoming for the Hornets, hoping for the first 2-0 start since 2014, a state title season that included a 21-7 win over Southland.

Thomas Jefferson at Brentwood

The 2-1 War Eagles host a 4-0 team with two GAPPS wins, and one GHSA and GISA win.
