Monday's Central Georgia Daily News 'n Notes: UGA's Jackson (Peach Co.) out for a bit; Mercer suddenly has a game Saturday; Braves Report (A win in front of Bobby Cox), Peach State CFB Report, more

Monday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Peach County’s Jackson out for a few weeks at UGA

Kearis Jackson finally got a chance to start, and now he’s out for maybe a month. Jackson broke a few bones in his hand on a hit after a fourth-quarter catch Saturday against Vanderbilt.

Suddenly, Mercer has a game this week

Mercer was off, and Presbyterian was going to play Stetson on Saturday.

Dorian apparently didn’t like all that.

The major weather issues led to Presbyterian and Stetson cancelling their non-conference game, and PC picking up a home game with Mercer for the new season opener.

All in less than a week.

Kickoff is 2 p.m. in Clinton, S.C. The two haven’t played in the modern era.

Mercer is 1-0 after thumping Western Carolina 49-27.

Braves Report

The pitching was solid for all nine innings, and Josh Donaldson yet again provided the big hit in Atlanta’s 6-3 win over Toronto.

Mike Soroka made it just past the halfway point, with six strikeouts and two walks in five innings, allowing three runs. He improved to 11-3, and Mark Melancon – the last of four pitchers – got his ninth save. Josh Tomlin and Shane Greene were solid in middle relief.

Dansby Swanson had half of Atlanta’s four hits, the Braves winning despite the soft offense. They were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
