HSFB2019: Friday night's Central Georgia scouting reports

 Games of the week

Lamar County at Jordan

The Trojans won 35-6 last year, and are better this year. A year ago, the lost 31-14 to Pike County, and avenged that 31-20 last week, outrushing Pike County 407-262 and running 25 more plays. Jordan is 0-4, but has only given up 38 more points than it’s scored. The last three losses are by eight, one, and seven. So the Trojans can’t look ahead.

Northeast at Bleckley County

Northeast hasn’t won three straight games since 2017, knocking off Lamar County, Rutland, and Twiggs County. That trio is nowhere near as impressive as Manchester, Central, and Bleckley County, if the Raiders can pull it off. The Raiders are balanced, the Royals more open. Northeast led 20-7, and then gave up the lead with 1:07 left, only to get the game-winner with 16 seconds left on a pass from Nolan Ussery to Brandon Watkins. No reason to think this one won’t be as tight, although Northeast comes in with more momentum and confidence than last year.

Northside vs. Warner Robins

Ah, nothing like 90 degrees at kickoff for the showdown. Again, it’s a matchup of contrasts. The Demons are among the more balanced teams around, with a 48-52 percent run-pass rate, while the Eagles run is 72.4 percent of the time. And then, Mason Ford and Zikhyree Hill team for 58.8 percent of the carries.

Warner Robins lost 31-14 to Colquitt County last week despite a 409-339 total yardage advantage. The Demons ride with QBs Jalen Addie and Christon Lane, with Jahlen Rutherford averaging 6.8 yards a carry.

First week’s Central Georgia HS football scoreboard

The Demons haven’t won three straight in this series since a seven-game winning streak from 1989-95. Their point differential is different than last year, no surprise. Same for Northside. Both have lost to quality teams and have played a variety of teams. Thus, both are experienced against most everything. But those Demon penalties are an issue, and predictability might be one for the Eagles.

Perry at Veterans

Veterans picked up a huge win last week, 7-2 over Houston County, in an odd game. The Warhawks were outgained by 70 yards and had four fewer first downs. Flags were an issue, but the bottom line is the Warhawks won a major defensive battle against a team with weapons. Perry was off, after a 45-20 win over Monroe. The Panthers have to be more consistent in all phases against a team with depth at running back and one of  the area’s better kickers in Daniel Gibbs. Veterans won 31-24 last year.

Southwest at Dodge County

The loser falls into a tough hole in the region. Southwest has a week off and then Northeast, which hosts Dodge County next week. The Indians remain a surprise team at 1-3, a spot they haven’t been in or near since an 0-5 start in 2010, a year after starting off 1-3. Dodge County is giving up 37.75 points a game, the highest mark in program history, according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. The scoring is pretty close to normal, so Southwest will likely get a team that comes out frothing on defense to turn things around.

Stratford at Mount de Sales

Stratford is off a rough game, having gotten only 34 plays on offense en route to surrendering 40-plus points to Fellowship Christian for the second straight year. The last 40-point game against the Eagles before 2018’s meeting? The regular-season finale in 2015, a 48-28 loss to Aquinas in crossover play. Mount de Sales didn’t have much rust after two weeks off, dispatching Greene County 33-8. Mount de Sales won 21-20 in overtime last year, blocking the game-tying PAT. But the Eagles don’t have the same dimensions on offense this year.
