Central vs. Northeast, Thompson

          Northeast looks to come out sharp after last week’s stunning crushing of Manchester. Can Central’s defense, off a rough night against Howard, hold Northeast to single digits again? Central won 27-2 last year, but will have to deal with a better offense, and one that’s pretty balanced with QB Travion Solomon and RB Deondre Duehart. Northeast has passed 63 times and run 73 times, as per MaxPreps info, and averaging 345 yards a game on offense.

Griffin at Upson-Lee

          Upson-Lee won 21-7 behind Jake Davis’s 223 yards and two scores, plus three touchdowns from Thad Webb. But a defense that came up with key stops lost a number of impact players. The Bears are off to a nice 3-0 start under new head coach Kareem Reid. The Knights have to get past giving up the Fitzgerald game by allowing a big-play score in the final 20 seconds. Upson-Lee’s ground game needs to step up, enough to be used more when there’s a lead.

Jackson vs. Howard, Ed DeFore

          Once the Huskies dispatched of Westside, they didn’t take long to start thinking about Jackson. The Red Devils took advantage of a flat Howard team a year ago and stormed out to a 24-0 lead before the Huskies scored twice late for a 24-12 loss. Jaylon Clark has stepped in at QB and done a nice job, taking advantage of the threats of Jeremiah Kelly and Javarsia Meadows in the backfield and an offensive line that’s playing pretty well. The defense, led by Jason Parham, Andrew Garnett, and Keanu Blash, bowed up against Westside’s passing game, which is notable. Jackson just missed knocking off rival and defending Region 2-4A champ Mary Persons, so this is a game-to-gauge for Howard.

Peach County at Mary Persons

          Who’s gone from Mary Persons who was huge in the 35-21 win last year? Desmond Williams, who had a pick-6. J.T. Hartage and Quen Wilson, who connected on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Daniel Lavelle, who had a scoop and score. Very few Trojans are gone. Peach County has the variety of weapons this year – and experience – that Mary Persons had last year. The Trojans’ passing game is off to a slow start yardage-wise, but QB Jaydon Gibson is due for a 300-yard game. A swarming defense is likely to have a huge day for the visitors.

Veterans at Houston County

          Few teams are as balanced as the upstart now-ranked Bears, who have 111 pass attempts and 107 rushing tries, nine scores through the air and 11 on the ground. Max Rigby is completing 61.3 percent of his passes, and has a nifty 9-1 TD-interception ratio. As with his predecessor, now in Athens, he’s spreading it around, with four receivers – Leeshoen Jarrett, Jaylen Mills, Isaiah Harris, and Kyah Plummer – each with at least 10 catches and a touchdown. The Warhawks are run-heavy, with 144 carries to 58 passes. Julian Barnes and Lebron Fields lead the ground game, Fields with five touchdowns on 39 carries. The nifty Houston County defense will crowd the box and force QB Blake Ethridge to make plays.

Warner Robins at Colquitt County (8 p.m.)

          Angered by a loss to 6A’s No. 1 team, Colquitt County has probably been slobbering all week. Or maybe been a little flat. The Packers’ 50-49 loss to Valdosta was a wild one, with Colquitt County missing a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds. The officials better be in shape, because these two teams will draw some flags. Former Jones County head coach Justin Rogers is at Colquitt County, and is buddies with his successor, who left Warner Robins for the job. But the Demons are a little different in scheme the past few years. Last year’s game was actually fairly competitive, the Packers taking control with a flurry of points sparked by Warner Robins mistakes en route to a 41-14 win. A repeat wouldn’t necessarily be a shock.

ACE at Fullington

          ACE rolled 37-7 last year.

Baldwin at Northside

          Northside won 45-0.

Bleckley County at Marion County

          Marion County won 41-39, thanks to a pair of missed PATs and a field goal.

Brookstone at FPD

          Brookstone won 37-14.

Dodge County at Fitzgerald

          Dodge County rolled 28-9 last year, but is without the key figures in that romp.

Dublin at Brooks County

          Brooks County won 13-10 last year.

Fellowship Christian at Stratford

          Stratford fell 41-14.

Hancock Central at GMC

          GMC fell hard, 36-3.

Lamar County at Pike County

          Pike County won 31-14 on the road.

Monticello at Union County

          Union County rolled 38-22.

Mount de Sales at Greene County

          MdS won 20-14 at home and had to battle despite gaining more than 200 yards than Greene County, but has been off for two weeks.

Putnam County at Rabun County

          Rabun County won 42-21.

Schley County at Hawkinsville

          Hawkinsville fell 34-0.

Southwest at Lee County

          The Trojans cruised 50-0.

South Effingham at West Laurens

          West Laurens threw a 37-0 shutout.

Swainsboro at Washington County

          The Golden Hawks won a wacky 47-45 roller coaster that came down to the final 90 seconds.

Twiggs County at Macon County

          Macon County rolled 68-0.

Wilkinson County at Metter

          Metter won 35-0.

Woodland at Jones County

          The Greyhounds won 38-22.

 

GISA/GAPPS

Gatewood at Community Christian

          Gatewood held on 19-10 last year.

Piedmont at John Hancock

          A GISA-GAPPS battle.

Pinewood Christian at John Milledge

          JMA romped 35-6.

Trinity Christian at Westwood

          TCS had little trouble in a 49-13 win.

Westfield at at Bulloch

          Turnovers hurt Westfield in a 28-6 loss.
