HSFB19: Friday night's Central Georgia scouting reports: Who will stay undefeated?

Games of the week
Howard vs. Westside
The signature win for then-new head coach Paul Carroll came when Quintan Sewell found Javarsia Meadows for a 31-yard TD pass with 20.6 seconds left broke a tie and shortly thereafter gave Howard a 28-21 win. Sewell is gone, but Meadows is back. Jaylon Clark has taken over at quarterback, and given the Huskies a little more at the position, albeit not as much as Westside’s Victor Dixon (55-83-1/8 785 yards). Howard survived a game loaded with mistakes for both teams, and the winner will likely have done that again.
Monroe at Perry
Monroe is scoring less than a year ago, but it 2-1 again. The Panthers are 1-2 and giving up 29 points a game, eight more than a year ago at this point. Perry’s defense went up against a good quarterback last week against Westside, good prep for Monroe’s Jordan Edwards, who was 15 of 23 for 277 yards two weeks ago.
Dodge County at Appling County
The Pirates are among the top dozen teams in 3A, at 2-0 for the first time since going 12-2 in 2011. The Indians are on the fringe of both AA polls after losing 45-28 to 4A West Laurens. Dodge County is more balanced than in recent years, while running more with one main back, Daylon Gordon. Jamal Mahan and Eli Williams lead a Dodge County defense that has been tested early. The Pirates of head coach Rick Tomberlin are more one-dimensional, with 366 yards a game rushing.

Fitzgerald at Upson-Lee
Fitzgerald is ranked in AA, as usual, and the numbers so far are similar to last year. Upson-Lee is again 2-1, too, having found ways to nip East Paulding and pull away from 5A Harris County. The Knights had chances last year before losing 28-24 despite being without some key players. U-L QB Jake Davis had four TD passes and no interceptions, and the Knights are showing good balance while still seeking some consistency.
Mary Persons at Lovett
Lovett is 2-1 for the first time since 2016, and has a big win over Greater Atlanta Christian, winning by one after blocking a PAT in overtime in the opener after coming back from a 23-7 fourth-quarter deficit. A hammering by Marist followed, again, as did a hammering of B.E.S.T., again. QB Blaine McAllister was 28 of 38 for 357 yards and two scores against GAC. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have scored two more points than they’ve given up, and are much more one-dimensional than in several years. They’re likely without two-way standout Rico Harden, one of the players they can least afford to lose.
Peach County at Houston County
Houston County hasn’t been 3-0 since 2016, and have already passed last year’s win total. But two of the opponents aren’t regular playoff teams by any stretch, and Perry will take some time to get going. Still, outsoring opponents 123-10 is a step up for Houston County, which has its best team since 2016, and by a bit. Still, the 6A Bears will need to be near-perfect against the 3A Trojans, who have to avoid a flat start after last week’s rousing 40-17 pounding of then-No. 1 6A Lee County. Don’t be surprised if this is a game longer than expected. It was 28-7 at halftime of last year’s 49-14 Peach County win.
