Five Central Georgia teams in GHSA softball power rankings top 10

Three private and two public school teams from Central Georgia are in the top 10 of the first GHSA softball power rankings.

Tattnall is No. 3 and Mount de Sales No. 4 with Stratford No. 9 on the private-school list.

ACE is eighth and GMC ninth in the public-school list, with Crawford County and Hawkinsville at 12-13.

Wesleyan and Gordon Lee are the No. 1 teams in their respective classifications.

Honor Roll

Former Northside standout Cory Munson is the Conference USA special teams player of the week after drilling a pair of field goals (45 and 19 yards), making both PATs, putting three of four kickoffs in the end zone, and properly booting a recovered onside kick.

Georgia College put more than 40 athletes on the Division II Athletic Directors Association’s Academic Achievement List. Central Georgians making the list: softball players Amber Coy of Houston County and Caroline Snider of Brentwood, and women’s soccer player Sofia Lekas of Mount de Sales. …

Middle Georgia State’s Cara MacFarland is the SSAC’s attacker of the week.

A leadoff walk and a one-out walk got Brentwood set for the walk-off single in the seventh. Olivia Brown had three hits and Sutton Eady two for JMA, Brayden Latimer driving in two runs.

Crawford County 8, Marion County 0

Bailey Phillips threw a one-hitter and struck out 14 in six innings, on 76 pitches. Bailey Carreker drove in four runs on three hits from leadoff, while Layla Loyd and Haven Ragan added two hits each.

Houston County 4, Veterans 2

The Warhawks outhit the Bears by one, but Houston County was helped by four walks while winning pitcher Rylee Lamb struck out four with no walks. Both teams stranded eight. Makayla Krepps had two hits for the Bears, while Kendall Huelsman had two RBI on a homer and Averi Martin two hits. Jenna Thomas, Kaylee Brown, and Emily Myers each had two hits for the Warhawks.

Peach County 19, Southwest 1

Seven Southwest errors led to 13 unearned runs in the three-inning game. Cheyenne McDonald struck out four on 42 pitches in throwing a no-hitter. Alex Scott had a two homers and a triple en route to five RBI. McDonald and Audrey Lewis added two hits, while Scott, Teiara Bower, and Eryn Bailey each scored three times.

Stratford 6, Eagle’s Landing 0

The Eagles scored three in the first and cruised. Mary Elaine Mitchell had three hits and Taylor Justice had two RBI for Stratford, Shelby Brandt and Nadia Reese scoring twice. Kenna McElmurray fanned 11 with two walks in the complete-game win.

Braves Report

Mike Foltynewicz got all the offense he’d need in the first two innings en route to a seven-inning, three-hit, seven-strikeout performance to lead Atlanta to a 7-2 win over Philadelphia.

Atlanta won its 90th game and extended its lead over Washington to 9.5 games and dropped the magic number to 10.

Josh Donaldson drove in three runs, Freddie Freeman had three hits, and Ronald Acuna scored three times.

Acuna and Donaldson belted homers and Freeman a double.

The three Atlanta pitchers gave up only five hits and two walks.
