Wednesday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
From Perry and Westfield to on scholarship at Alabama
Westfield hasn’t sent many football players to the college level, whether it’s a major college or Division III or NAIA.
Giles Amos stood out for the Hornets, helping them to a pair of GISA Class 3A state titles while catching nearly 2,200 yards worth of passes, but didn’t get much attention.
Undaunted, the multi-sport standout sought out Alabama, was welcomed by the Tide staff and Nick Saban, eventually earning a preferred walk-on slot with the nation’s top program, earning an official roster spot as a sophomore.
He got into two games last year, Louisiana and The Citadel, and graduated in August.
Finally, the icing. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa broke the news on Instagram Tuesday night: Amos was now on scholarship.
Amos is likely to get into more than two games this year, a combination of his work and improvement and some vacancies at the position.
Cephus back in uniform, on practice field
His eligibility has yet to be clarified, but Stratford alum Quintez Cephus was back on the practice field Wednesday at Wisconsin. He hadn’t lost much, and expectations are of a huge impact once he gets back into a full football – and contact – mode.
