Henley among the leaders at John Deere
Russell Henley had the lead for a chunk of the day Friday, and survived a final-hole double bogey to fall only into a tie for fourth at the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.
Henley is tied with Harold Varner III, Daniel Berger, Cameron Tringale, and Adam Schenk, all with a 132 and three shots behind Jhonattan Vegas, who lit the course up with a 62.
Henley got off to a good start with birdies on the first two holes, a 42-foot shot getting him to within a foot on 2 for the birdie.
Lucas Glover and Tringale finished strong and slipped ahead at the end of the day, Glover into third.
Gann remains in contention at state amateur
Three Central Georgia golfers will play on in the Georgia State Golf Association's state amateur tournament, with one still in the hunt.
Stan Gann of Warner Robins is seven strokes behind leader Jonathan Keppler of Marietta, whose 66 put him at 134 and in front by three strokes.
Gann took a stroke off his first-round score and sits in a tie for eighth at 141, one of 14 players under par after two rounds..
Central Georgians also making the cut: Wilson Andress and Luke Dasher, representing FPD, past and present.
Andress, a sophomore at Georgia Southern, dropped back with a 76 for a two-round 149, putting him in a tie for 39th.
Dasher dropped a stroke with a 77 for a 153, which put the current Viking tied for 65th and right at the cut, which was 9 over.
Steve Welsh shot a second straight 77 to sit at 10 over, one stroke off the cut.
Allen Peake's weekend is done at 155, 11 over and in a tie for 83rd.
Dodge County's Michael Clardy had one of the best improvements from the first to second round, slicing seven strokes off. But it was way too late, and he finished with a 157, tied for 96th.
John Walker's 84 dropped him into a tie for 121st.
Braves Report
Three runs in the first put Atlanta in a little control, and the Braves held on for a 5-3 win at San Diego.
Ronald Acuna and Josh Donaldson had homers, but Dallas Keuchel went seven innings, with five strikeouts, four walks, six hits, and one run. Then Chad Sobotka, Jacob Webb, and Luke Jackson finished things off, the Padres getting a run off Sobotka and off Jackson (15th save).
Donaldson drove in four runs on two homers, and Dansby Swanson added two hits.

Macon tops Savannah
Nate Schreckengost’s two-run double was followed by run-scoring singles from Alex Canty and Brandon Ashy as Macon put up four runs in the first en route to a 7-4 win over Savannah at Luther Williams Field.
Schreckengost added an RBI single in Macon’s two-run second.
Savannah scored four in the top of the ninth to break the shutout.
Schreckengost had three hits, three RBI, and two runs, while Canty added two runs and two hits.
Ryan Kouba got the win (3-1), first in relief of starter Cort Roedig, who went 4.1 innings and struck out eight. Macon pitchers whiffed 17, Savannah 13.
Savannah hosts Macon on Saturday. Lexington County visits Macon on Tuesday and Savannah returns on Thursday.
