Sunday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.
Savannah breaks losing streak against Macon
Macon struck first, but Savannah answered three times and held on for a 3-1 win over the visiting Bacon and break a four-game losing streak to Macon in a game stopped after seven innings because of rain.
The Bacon lost despite Cory Bartholomew (Tattnall) and Jay Causey teaming for a three hitter. Bartholomew struggled with some control, walking eight against four strikeouts. Savannah pitching, meanwhile, struck out 10 with one walk.
Cal Gentry (Perry/Georgia College) had two of Macon’s five hits.
Macon at Gastonia on Monday, and then hosts Gastonia on Tuesday.
Braves Report
Mike Soroka left after getting hit by a pitch in the top of the third, and Atlanta’s bullpen stepped up in a low-scoring game, the Braves getting a two-run pinch-hit homer by Johan Comargo in the 10th for a 4-3 win over Washington.
Well, sort of stepped up.
Josh Tomlin sat down 12 straight batters, but Grant Dayton gave up two runs – one earned – in two-thirds of an inning. Jacob Webb, Anthony Swarzak and A. J. Minter threw shutout innings while giving up some hits.
Luke Jackson walked leadoff batter Van Gomes in the bottom of the 10th, and pinch-hitter Kurt Suzuki followed with a weak single to right, Gomes coming in on a grounder to short that the Braves couldn’t turn into a double play.
After another single, Jackson got a second-out pop to first and routine grounder to short to finish it off.
Soroka was hit on his right elbow, and left after two innings with a strikeout and a hit. Josh Donaldson had two hits for Atlanta, including his 15th homer of the year.
