Florence pulls away from Macon late

A five-run seventh put Florence in control for a 5-1 win over Macon at Luther Williams Field in Coastal Plain League action.

Macon broke the shutout with one in the eighth.

M.J. Rookard (MGSU) went 3-for-4 at the leadoff spot, for nearly half of Macon’s hits. Tattnall grad Cory Bartholomew went five shutout innings with four strikeouts and four walks, not factoring into the decision.

Braves Report

A day after a rousing comeback win, the Braves gave up two runs in the ninth – unearned – to lose 6-5 to Philadelphia.

Luke Jackson suffered a blown save, thanks in large part to his own throwing error on a bunt that led to runners on second and third with no outs. Cesar Hernandez singled in the two runs, but the Phillies got nothing else. Atlanta went down in order in its half of the ninth.

Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak came to an end as Sean Newcomb lasted 2.2 innings, giving up two runs, as did Touki Toussaint in 2.1 innings.

Josh Donaldson had a three-run homer in the fifth for Atlanta, which matched Philly’s eight hits but had two errors good for five unearned runs.
