Appling County 5, Rutland 4, 8 inn.; Appling County 5, Rutland 2

Calvary Day 12, FPD 2; FPD 11, Calvary Day 1
          FPD lost the first inning 4-2, and then Calvary Day scored five in the third and three in the fourth in the opener. The Vikings turned things around in the nightcap, winning the first inning 8-2 and then riding the arm of Barrett Barkley for the win.

Columbus 1, Mary Persons 0; Columbus 9, Mary Person 5
          The Bulldogs outhit the visitors 5-2 in the opener and Trippe Moore struck out 10 with no walks, but Mary Persons couldn’t convert hits to runs. Columbus scored on an error and a double in the third. The offense showed up in the nightcap, but not as much as the Blue Devils, who broke a 3-3 tie with five in the fifth. Moore had three hits – two doubles – and two RBI, while Alex Kite added two hits. Both teams stranded seven runners, but the Bulldogs struck out nine times to just once for the Blue Devils in the Class 4A series.

Houston County 7, Grovetown 0; Houston County 14, Grovetown 4
          Three runs in the sixth clinched the 6A opener for the Bears, who tripled Grovetown in hits with 12, but also with three errors. Jeremy White had a two-run single in the sixth. Jaden Woods had three hits, and Jacob Profit had two hits along with White, who drove in two runs. Woods had five strikeouts, one hit, and five walks in three innings while Dylan Tabor threw the final four. The Bears scored seven runs with two outs in the fifth to seal the nightcap, Cam Jones with a two-run single and Woods with a three-run triple. Chandler Dawson and Coleman Willis split pitching duties for the Bears.

Johnson County 8, Hawkinsville 1; Johnson County 8, Hawkinsville 1

Northside-Columbus 8, Perry 1; Northside 11, Perry 3
          Perry bats were quieted in the opener, striking out 10 times and drawing no walks while managing only three hits, Northside getting three in the first. The Panthers pulled within 5-2 after four in the nightcap of the Class 4A series, but Northside pulled away with three each in the sixth and seventh. Andrew Newhouse had two hits for the Panthers, who again didn’t get a walk.

Tattnall 11, Athens Christian 1; Tattnall 2, Athens Christian 0
          Brett McHugh belted a first pitch over the wall in left for a game-ending two-run homer – his second of the game - in the bottom of the fifth in the opener. The Trojans scored two runs in four innings and three in the second. McHugh, Miles Morris, Hunter Alexander, and Kaden Toth had two hits each, McHugh with four RBI and Morris with three, B.J. Spears scoring three times. Brooks Gorman went all five for the win. Tattnall loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning of the nightcap and came up empty, then made a two-run Gorman single in the fourth stand up. Bo Hatcher went the first five innings, with Carter Fink and Gorman going an inning each to team for a one-hitter and sweep the Class A Private series.

Westside-Augusta 4, Bleckley County 3; Bleckley County 10, Westside 3
          The Royals gave up the lead with a run in the top of the fourth and couldn’t get it back in the Class AA opener. The run came on a leadoff walk, two outs, and a single to center. Bleckley County had a runner picked off in the fifth and was doubled up in the sixth, going down in order in the seventh. Carson Waters and Jack Fernandez had two hits each for the Royals, who came up big with seven in the sixth – overcoming a 3-2 deficit – while tripling Westside in hits in the nightcap. Steven Knighton had three hits and three RBI, while Brody Little, Fernandez, Andrew Thompson, and Ethan Hulsey had two hits each, Little driving in two runs and scoring three times. Waters went the distance, giving up five hits, with four strikeouts and two walks.

Woodward Acad. 10, Upson-Lee 0; Upson-Lee 6, Woodward 1
         Woodward went up 8-0 after two en route to a perfect-game win in six innings in the opener, striking out only three Knights. The Knights rebounded well in the nightcap, going down 1-0 and busting open for six runs in the fourth, two coming on Logan Spivey’s one-out single. The inning included three hit batters, a sacrifice, and an error. Gabe Pollard had two hits to back up Alex Blount, who fanned six with two walks in the complete-game two-hitter.

B-Putnam County 2, Coosa 1
          The visitors were down 1-0 at halftime, but won the second half to advance in AA.

B-Richmond Hill 2, Houston County 1
          The Bears battled on the road, getting a goal from James Yun in the 6A battle.

B-Upson-Lee 3, Columbus 0
          The top-ranked and undefeated Knights got two goals from Chase Winters and one from Triston Coker to advance to the 4A quarterfinals.

G-Whitewater 2, Veterans 1
          The Warhawks were knocked off at home in the 5A series, senior Danielle Coumbs managing their lone goal.

B-Whitewater 4, Veterans 1, OT

B-Woodward 6, Perry 0
          The hosts got out to a 4-0 first-half lead in the 4A battle.
