Column: Hard to put firing of Bob Hoffman in context

(Posted Thursday afternoon, sequel coming Friday afternoon) A young team lost close games to good teams. It happens. Mercer was quite likely to return to the land of contention and 20 wins in 2019-20, but Hoffman didn’t get a chance to prove as much. First column of two.

Around/About Central Georgia

Busy weekend for Mercer

And it starts with some scheduling change for softball, which hosts the Mercer Bears Classic.

Mercer will play Cleveland State Friday at 3:30 p.m., Fordham Saturday at 1:30 and Ball State at 3:45 p.m., and UConn at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. South Dakota is also in the tournament, which starts at 9 a.m. Friday.

The baseball team has another tough visitor for the weekend series starting at 6 p.m. Friday. Binghamton has finished first in the America East six times since 2007 and reached the NCAA Tournament four times in that span.

The men’s golf team co-hosts the annual Linger Longer with Kennesaw State at The Landing at Reynolds Lake Oconee, starting Friday morning and running through Sunday.

The field: Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Ohio State, Virginia, Augusta, Charlotte, Liberty, Toledo, UNCG, Louisville, and South Alabama.

The women’s golf team has a road trip, competing in the Clover Cover in Arizona, hosted by Notre Dame and including Cincinnati, Florida International, Houston, IUPUI, Kansas State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, UNCG, Southern Cal, Western Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Around/About Georgia

Rush Propst fired at Colquitt County

It wasn’t unexpected or a surprise, but it was still ground-rattling in Georgia high school football when the county board met in public – and heard from citizens and players - and in private and voted him out unanimously. The investigation is now with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
