Bob Hoffman fired at Mercer: Twitter observers - including Bruce Pearl - can't understand why
Central Georgia Sports Report
Your not going to find a better man or basketball coach than Bob Hoffman. This is Disappointing but consistent! https://t.co/vStKT8qq6b
— Bruce Pearl (@coachbrucepearl) March 11, 2019
Mercer won 11 conference games a year ago, had a bad season in the greatest recent SoCon season, averaged 19 wins a year and earned the greatest victory in school history in 2014 NCAA Tournament. So, of course, fired coach Bob Hoffman. Solid. 🤦♂️

Whaaaat?! Mercer let Bob Hoffman go??
— Haley (@cute_n_curli) March 11, 2019
Class exit, well written, let me just tell everyone though that Bob Hoffman is as competitive as anyone I’ve ever known and he has a bit of an ornery streak at times and I can promise you beneath the stoic and classy note below he is furious (with good reason!) https://t.co/dJUrn1GOBS

mercer fired bob hoffman. have they forgotten he led mercer to beat DUKE in 2014??? disrespectful
— gnoems (@noemi_oriana) March 12, 2019
So frustrated by college basketball. We preach culture, character, building men, then guys like Bob Hoffman get fired while others keep and get bigger jobs. Its embarrassing. I know the guys my son would play for and Bob Hoffman is at the top of the list.

Absolutely floored to see that Mercer has fired Bob Hoffman. pic.twitter.com/t9ps3Z0qP6

A good man. Wonderful leader, teacher, coach. In this day and age we need more Bob Hoffman's and less...I'll stop there. Well done good and faithful COACH! https://t.co/vnPJPX5iii

Bob Hoffman out at @MercerMBB because of one underperforming season. His roster loaded with juniors and freshmen. Won 19+ games 6 of 7 previous seasons. Unless there's some off-court issue, this is atrocious. Shame on Jim Cole and the entire @mercerbears administration.

Sad day for Mercer basketball, couldn’t have asked anything more out of a coach and mentor for 4 years. Some of the best memories in my life because of coach and those 4 years!! Thanks for everything @CoachBobHoffman https://t.co/X5zRoSWN49

If you're not sure if success changes expectations, Mercer fires head coach Bob Hoffman after only his 2nd losing season in 8 yrs. He won 27 games, then 24, then 27 again (and upset Duke in the NCAAT), then 19 in 3 of the next 5 yrs. If they DIDN'T upset Duke, is he still fired?

One of the best men/coaches I have encountered in the recruiting process regarding my sons. Blessed to have crossed paths with him. I wish you nothing but the best! @CoachBobHoffman https://t.co/Vm5Vjn2Enk
— Coach McGowens (@coachmcgowens18) March 11, 2019
Mercer fired Bob Hoffman as men's basketball coach. He did so much to promote college hoops in middle GA. He helped put Mercer Hoops on the map. Yes, they had a bad season, but this is the answer? Really?
— BillShanks (@BillShanks) March 11, 2019
What a joke. The damn President couldn't even thank him in press release.
Tough news for the #Mercer community with the relieving of Bob Hoffman from his head coaching position. He certainly did a lot for the @MercerBears community and men's basketball team.
— Chris Hogan (@ChrisHogan__) March 11, 2019
Disgusted with Mercer University and its firing of Bob Hoffman.
— Phil Brown (@philipmbrown64) March 11, 2019
Imagine thinking you are better than Bob Hoffman, the guy who led you to beat Duke. https://t.co/GrkNVWHtxj
— TheWadoodAbides (@TheWadoodAbides) March 11, 2019
Bob Hoffman of Mercer was 198-145 in his first 10 years at Mercer. He averaged 19.8 wins a year. In 2014, 14 seed Mercer upset 3 seed Duke in the NCAA... yeah the Duke from the ACC. Today Bob was fired ... what a joke
— Big Shots Media (@BigShotsMedia) March 11, 2019
Man, the Bob Hoffman news just reaffirms the notion that winning is the only thing that matters in coaching.
— Z.A. Roddenberry (@zachroddenberry) March 12, 2019
It cares nothing about your love for the school, city, community, nothing!
Bob Hoffman wins 20 games a year for 10 years, has one down season and gets fired by Mercer. Damn... Deserved better. Did A LOT for that school.
— David Moulton (@THEDavidMoulton) March 11, 2019
I am in a fighting mood. Bob Hoffman deserved better than that. #HoffmansHooligansForever
— Matt Williams (@mkwilliams28) March 11, 2019
Just a few short years ago coach Bob Hoffman and Mercer shocked the world upsetting Duke in the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Now he’s out of a job. Let go. Crazy business college basketball. #MarchMadness 🏀
— (((RealClayDade))) (@ClayDade) March 11, 2019
They think they're going to get a better coach than Bob Hoffman??
— Patrick Keogan (@patrickkeogan) March 11, 2019
Please.
Wow. Bob Hoffman out at Mercer. He’s been the face of that school for as long as I can remember.
— Patrick Reeves (@PatrickR_1) March 11, 2019
Vaya con dios, Bob Hoffman. You served your country well.
— Nittany Tar Heel (@NittanyTarHeel) March 11, 2019
This is such a bummer. Bob Hoffman will always be one of my favorites. Candid, honest, funny. And always available. I used to text him when I wanted an interview, if he couldn’t make it he’d arrange players to meet me instead. Not sure how many D1 coaches are that accommodating. https://t.co/NjpsUvgzva
— Darnay Tripp (@DarnayTripp) March 11, 2019
Bob Hoffman, Mercer's coach during it's finest hour in 2014, is let go after a SoCon conference tourney quarterfinal loss to Furman. He was at his fiery best on Saturday, maybe he knew the writing was on the wall. #SoConHoops https://t.co/swt1laj27E
— Al Peterson (@BigAl_WMU) March 11, 2019
Weird move, why fire Bob Hoffman
— Jeff Fisher (@JeffFis55884758) March 11, 2019
College basketball lost a good man Monday when Mercer U. fired men’s coach Bob Hoffman (209-165). He led the Bears for 11 years, winning 2 league titles, averaging 19 wins a year, and beating Duke in the Big Dance (2014). It’s Mercer’s loss due to its higher expectations. #Mercer
