Thursday's Central Georgia region basketball tournament headquarters: Central girls pull off upset to lead, among those headed to championship games

With Central’s girls being one of the area’s surprise teams and the boys from Westside and Central getting after each other in the Region 4-AAA championship, the stands are likely to be full early at Westside.
Friday is the first day and night of region tournament championships, and several Central Georgia teams are going for the top seeds in the GHSA state tournament, as well as in some GISA action.
Central’s girls, undergoing a major roster turnover as well as a transition at head coach, were expected to win maybe a handful – on one hand – of games, but the Chargers came together earlier than predicted under first-year head coach Tamara Williams.
They knocked off top seed Peach County Thursday night, avenging 14- and 12-point losses, after dumping host Westside on Monday. Central faces perennial state tournament team Kendrick in the final.
There’s nothing surprising about the boys final, with Central and Westside the top two seeds who split the season series. The teams have combined for nearly 45 wins, the Seminoles on a 10-game winning streak and the Chargers on a six-game roll.
Another team unexpected to be playing for the trophy is Houston County’s boys.
The Bears have made a major turnaround under head coach Don Hudson, improving to 15-9 this season after knocking off second seed Lee County in overtime Thursday in 1-6A action at Coffee.
According to MaxPreps, that ties the Bears’s best win total since 2006-07 when they went 15-14 under current Mary Persons head coach Greg Nix. Houston County will play either Coffee or Valdosta, who will finish their game on Friday after a shattered backboard on a dunk stopped play Thursday night.
Howard’s boys are hoping for an effort and upset of historic proportions.
The Huskies are 15-11, only their third winning season since their debut in 2010-11, but the opponent is 24-1 and has won 87 of its last 88 games: Upson-Lee.
And the margin this season averages 48 in the Knights’ two wins, Howard scoring 27 and 22 points.
The girls finale isn’t much of a surprise, with West Laurens and Spalding, the top two seeds each one win from 20 for the season.
Jones County’s girls go for the 4-5A title against tourney host Eagle’s Landing, which swept the season series 57-50 and 40-37.
Northeast has been a road warrior team this year, playing home games on the road while a new facility – as part of a new school – gets built, and the boys take on Washington County at Southwest in the 3-AA championship, East Laurens and top seed (and highly ranked) Dodge County playing for the girls title.
In GISA, Westfield’s girls take on host Pinewood for the 2-AAA championship, and both John Milledge teams can celebrate at home in 4-AAA, the girls facing Westminster and the boys Loganville Christian.
Brentwood’s girls face Edmund Burke for the 4-AA championship.

The Bears big season continues, thanks to double-doubles from Xavier Duncan and Austin Sloan, and a near double-double from Dylan Maas. Duncan had 15 points and 10 boards to go with two charges taken. Sloan had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals, and Maas nine points and eight rebounds.

The Greyhounds survived a five-point first quarter to tie it at halftime. It was knotted up after three, and Camryn James scored eight of her 13 points – and grabbed a few of her 16 rebounds - to lift Jones County. She also blocked nine shots. Nikki Greene had 14 points and Ty Richradson 11. They’ll face host Eagle’s Landing – a 67-62 winner over Locust Grove – in the championship.

Six Golden Hawks were in double figures: Jarden Maze with 16, Jamarius Dixon with 14, Kejuan Bloodsaw with 12, 11 each from Jawan Dukes and Ivory Williams, and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Keith Foster. Williams added six rebounds.
