Mercer ready to name new football coach?
Less than three weeks after dismissing its head football coach, Mercer appears ready to hire a head football coach.
The school is expected to schedule a press conference this week to announce Drew Cronic as its second head coach of the modern era.
Cronic just completed his second season at Lenoir-Rhyne, a Division II program in Hickory, N.C.
Footballscoop.com first reported the talks on Monday. Other sources last week reported Cronic as the front-runner, but the L-R Bearsâ season had to play out.
In announcing Bobby Lambâs dismissal on Nov. 24, Mercer athletics director Jim Cole said the school would employ CarrSports Consulting as âsearch counsel.â Football Scoop also reported the announcement could come Tuesday.
The website Flight Aware listed a private flight from Macon to Hickory, N.C. on Sunday afternoon, with the return flightâs departure less than 40 minutes after arriving.
Hickory is home to Lenoir-Rhyne.
Lenoir-Rhyneâs season came to an end Saturday with the No. 6 Bears falling 43-38 to West Florida in an NCAA Division II quarterfinal. The Bears finished 13-1.
That dropped Cronicâs record to 25-3 at L-R, the Bears going 12-2 in his first season.
