Thursday's Daily News 'n Notes

Thursday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media. Updates will be noted, so check back.

Saints-Falcons was one weird game

Matt Ryan was sacked nine times, and was the recipient of a posterizable stiff-arm.

Drew Brees was held to less than 200 yards passing, and yet again the Falcons – who had their first punt of the game blocked - couldn’t crack 100 yards rushing.

A player of the game candidate was Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo, who had three straight onside kicks recovered by the Falcons.

And Atlanta still had a chance, pulling within eight and getting the ball back on an onside kick.

But, of course, a sack for an 8-yard loss on fourth and 8 from the New Orleans 44 sealed the Saints 26-18 win Thursday night.

Ryan was 35 of 50 for 312 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, losing 53 yards on sacks. Brees didn’t go down at all, en route to an 18-of-30 night for 184 yards and a score.

The Falcons were without Julio Jones (shoulder). Calvin Ridley caught eight passes for 81 yards.

The win sealed the division for the Saints and officially eliminated the Falcons, now 3-9, from the playoffs.
