SEC Championship matchup is official
North Carolina 56, Mercer 7
Tyray Devzin cracked 1,000 rushing yards for the season to become the second player in Mercer record history to do so. Mercer ends the season at 4-8, the lowest win total since reviving the program in 2013.
Speculation on head coach Bobby Lamb’s status has been alive all season, picking up steam as the Bears – battling injuries – lost four straight and fell from playoff contention in the Southern Conference.
Lamb restructured the majority of the coaching staff after last season’s 5-6 season (4-4 in the SoCon).
A 41-7 loss to Wofford on senior day and homecoming only added to the temperature of the hotseat.
And the Bears were blown out by more points against a sub.-500 North Carolina team than by No. 15 Auburn (24-10) in 2017, and with only a touchdown difference from a loss at No. 1 Alabama at the end of that season.
The two-deep on offense and defense for the UNC game lists only five seniors, to along with 28 freshmen or sophomores out of 44 positions.
