The trip won’t be too far for the Mercer men’s soccer team in the NCAA Tournament.

Monday Morning Quarterback

          Is coming Tuesday.

For the first time in awhile, Mercer at Georgia Southern

Not since 2007 has Mercer made the trip down I-16 for a trip to Hanner Fieldhouse.

But the Bears will do it for a Tuesday night visit to Georgia Southern.

GSU leads the series - 68-41 according to Mercer’s release and 74-40 according to Georgia Southern’s media guide - and won 89-74 last December in Macon. The Bears are on a 12-game losing streak in Statesboro, dating back to 1985-86. Mercer lost 80-69 in the last visit, Nov. 26, 2007.

Both teams have had coaching changes since then, Mercer going from Mark Slonaker (dismissed in 200x) to Bob Hoffman (dismissed last spring) to Greg Gary. Georgia Southern was coached by Greg Price back then, and he was followed by Charlton Young for four seasons until current head coach Mark Byington took over in 2013-14.

TD Club taps players from Jones County, FPD

A Greyhound and a Viking earned honors from the Macon Touchdown Club.

Jones County’s Andrew Carner is the back of the week after going 15 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the Greyhounds’ first-round win over South Effingham.

FPD’s Harry Greer is the lineman of the week after racking up nine tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery and 29-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Vikings’ heartbreaking overtime loss at Wesleyan.

There were no special teams nominations.
