Evansville visits Macon on Friday and Saturday.

Henley takes a major penalty hit during good round

Russell Henley knows that subpar golf leads to a missed cut.

Henley wasn’t playing subpar golf at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on Saturday. He was 7-under in the second round, after a first-round 66.

Then he realized he had by mistake used a different ball during the round, a PGA Tour violation. He went to tournament officials, and after assorted consultations, came to a decision.

Henley was penalized two shots for four holes, an eight-stroke hit that ended his tournament when he finished the round with a 77.

The cut line was 1 under, and Henley finished the two rounds 1 over, missing the cut.

It broke a streak of eight straight tournament cuts Henley had made, ending last season and starting this season.

The pipeline from Houston County to Georgia continued Friday with Jaden Woods of the Bears signing to play baseball for the Bulldogs. …

Elle Doolittle of Howard signed Friday to play softball with Georgia State, becoming the first Howard softball player to sign with a Division I program.
