Suicide ruled in death of Georgia Southern freshman
The Bulloch County coroner ruled Tuesday that the Monday death of a Georgia Southern freshman football player was a suicide. Jordan Wiggins sent out texts hinting at his intention before overdosing on Benadryl.
Upset by 16-year-old highlights Mercer Tennis Classic action
Gabriella Price is pretty far from home, but didn’t play that way.
The 16-year-old form New York-then-Florida \ earned a spot in the main draw of the Mercer Tennis Classic by edging Suzan Lamens in a qualifying match, 6-1, 3-6 (10-6).
Price won the USTA Girls 18 National Clay Courts title in South Carolina last summer.
The main draws in singles and doubles get going in full Wednesday.
The two players who competed in the NCAA Division I women’s singles finals went at it on the Leroy Paddy Tennis Center courts, with Georgia’s Katerina Jokic taking on Miami’s Estela Perez-Somarriba.
Back in May, Jokic won the first set 7-6, and got off to a nice start Tuesday, leading 5-3. But she couldn’t close it out, and Perez-Somarriba won 7-6 (2). Perez-Somarriba in May won the second of three sets 6-2. This time, she took the second set 6-4 to avoid a third set.
Former Georgia Tech standout Irina Falconi knocked off upstart Peyton Stearns 6-2, 6-4 to reach the main draw.
