Georgia Southern freshman football player dies suddenly

          Jordan Wiggins, a freshman offensive lineman from Tallahassee, Fla., at Georgia Southern, died Monday night. The athletics department released a statement confirming the death, but no other information is yet available.

 

Qualifying wraps up at Mercer Tennis Classic

          The weather was good for tennis on the opening day of the Mercer Tennis Classic, concluding with a great match between Peyton Stearns and Epiphany B. Turner.

          Stearns won her qualifying match 4-6, 7-5 (10-4).

          Angelina Gabueva, the top seed in the qualifying field, was knocked out by Irina Falconi 6-3, 6-2.

          Australia’s Astra Sharma is the top seed in the singles draw.

          Action resumes Tuesday at 10 a.m. Defending champ Varvar Lepchenko faces veterans Coco Vandeweghe in one of the more interesting first-round matchup.

          It was a pretty brutal opening round of the GHSA volleyball playoffs.

          Everybody in Central Georgia lost, except Lamar County. Ouch. The Trojans travel to Coosa next.

TD Club taps players from Windsor and Mount de Sales

          Two players will be honored Monday night by the Macon Touchdown Club.

          Windsor’s JaBoree Goodson, the back of the week, carried 11 times for 252 yards and three scores on one side of the ball, turning in five solo tackles and five assists plus two interceptions – one taken back 45 yards for a score – in the game against Solid Rock.

          Mount de Sales standout Josiah Cotton earned lineman honors after racking up 16 tackles, two for loss, at linebacker, in the romp over Tattnall, adding 183 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on offense.

          No special-teams players were nominated.

          The Trojans advance to the semifinals and host Tiftarea at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

          Emma Williams threw a four-inning no-hitter, striking out two with one walk on only 44 pitches in the GISA playoff. Avery Adams belted two doubles, and Emma and Ellie Williams boomed homers as part of the Hornets’ 12-hit attack. Adams had three hits and three RBI, while Sadie Hayes and Sydney Langdon had two hits each. Both Williams’ along with Marena and Carliegh Knowles had two RBI each. The Hornets improved to 31-1-1 after the nightcap romp, keyed by a three-run first and five-run fourth. Marena Knowles belted a homer en route to a two-hit, four-RBI game in the five-inning second game. Hayes added two hits and two RBI. Sydney Langdon went all five, striking out four with two walks and four hits.

          Westfield hosts Pinewood Christian at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in a 3A semifinal.
