HSFB2019: Friday night's Central Georgia scouting reports

Games of the Week

Northside (3-4/0-1) at Lee County (5-1)

The battle of last year’s 6A finalists is one with eyes on Northside, which has been shut out in two straight games for the first time since 1970. The last time Northside was blanked three straight times? Hasn’t happened. Granted, the competition is better, but the Eagles – a 24-7 loser a year ago - aren’t used to this kind of history.

Perry (3-3/1-0) at Howard (4-2/0-1), Ed DeFore

There’s more balance here with both teams than some might think. Perry having tried only nine more passes than Howard, with the QB ratings less than a point apart. But the Huskies have more TD passes and fewer interceptions, and both teams get 5.8 yards a carry. Perry, led by C.J. Demicco, has a 15-7 sack advantage, but Howard QB Jaylon Clark is a good athlete. Keep an eye on the key defensive play/stand and kicking.

Pike County (3-3/1-1) at Central (1-6/1-2), Henderson

Central is playing better than its record, with three very winnable games as Ls. The Chargers have outscored the last three opponents 79-56, and three of the last four 112-90, going 1-3 in the process. And Pike County barely got past Rutland, and faces an improving, more consistent team, led by QB Jalik Thomas (584  yards and 5 TDs passing, 550 yards and 6 TDs rushing). Central gets back into the playoff race with a win.

Dodge County (3-4/2-1) at Washington County (4-2/1-1)

Two rushers are likely, even in a defensive battle, to crack 1,000 yards for the season, Dodge County’s Daylon Gordon (112-853, 8 TDs) and Washington County’s Shamarcus Poole (89-856, 13 TDs). Both have such big-play ability, even otherwise being held in check most of the time doesn’t mean each can’t break off a 50-yarder. So again, the key in a game with similar philosophies is who makes the stop and then can convert – or at least wear down a defense with a decent late possession – in the fourth quarter. A key: Dodge County – a 20-6 winner last year - is more of a passing threat, but Malyk Walker (64-769, 6 TDs) gives Washington County a big No. 2 rushing threat.

Tattnall (3-3/2-1) at Mount de Sales (6-0/2-0)

Tattnall needs to win out – including with a crossover upset, and get some help - to make the playoffs, the Trojans at No. 30 in the latest power rankings. The Cavs are going for the first region title and perfect regular season since 1997 back in the GISA days. That year, MdS won 23-15 in the regular season for Tattnall’s only loss, the Trojans getting revenge 36-35 in OT in the state championship. Tattnall won 28-17 last eyar.

FPD (3-3/2-0) at Stratford (2-4/1-1)

Both teams are in must-wins, No. 27 FPD and No. 18 Stratford. The Vikings also have higher-ranked Mount de Sales left, and the crossover opponent is to be determined. The Eagles all but clinch a spot with a win, with Wilkinson County and Twiggs County left. Stratford won 19-13 last year.
