East Laurens 46, Wheeler County 30

Fitzgerald 28, Upson-Lee 24

The Knights took a 10-7 lead after Jake Davis hit Malik Smith with a 28-yard TD pass, and then went up 10 on Thad Webb’s 28-yard scoop-and-score. The hosts pulled within 17-14 by halftime, and took the lead on a long TD pass only for Davis to hook up with Demeke Colbert for a 68-yard touchdown and a 24-21 lead. But the Purple Hurricane took the lead and then held on. Davis passes for 225 yards and two scores for Upson-Lee, which was without Travon Walker and Chance Gamble, both out with non-serious injuries.

GMC 63, ACE 0

GMC took the suspense out of ACE’s upset hopes with 35 points in the second quarter after getting only seven in the first. Malik Folston got the onslaught going with a 70-yard scoring run, followed by Devin Stephens’ second score. Foster added a 20-yard and 60-yard run, plus a 50-yard punt return for the Bulldogs. Stephens chipped in another 65-yard kickoff return, and GMC (3-0) got big-play scores from Chaze Goddard (62 yards) and Trey Wood (74 yards). Blake Smith was 6-for-11 for 117 yards passing for ACE.

Jones County 55, Union Grove 7

Well, Union Grove at least tied the second half, Jones County taking a 48-0 halftime lead. The Greyhounds, now averaging 41.3 points a game, are off to their third 4-0 start in five seasons under head coach Justin Rogers.

Hancock Central 32, FPD 17

Things were good for FPD for three quarters, the Vikings holding on to a 17-14 lead. But Hancock Central took the lead on a 10-yard run by Keveon Robbins with 4:54 left and added another Robbins run and 100-yard interception return by Carmichael Allen to seal it for the Bulldogs, who outgained the Vikings 302-265, and had one more first down. Holy Innocents 49, Rutland 7

Howard 28, Westside 21

Howard’s defense came up big in the fourth quarter, to set up a bigger offensive drive. QB Quintan Sewell hit an open Javarsia Meadows for a 31-yard touchdown with 20.6 seconds left for the lead. QB Victor Dixon moved the Seminoles to within range, getting off one more play from the 35, but his pass came up short and Lorenzo Hargrove picked it off at the six and hit the turf at the 11 to finish the win and cause a mad rush to celebrate. Howard became only the second Bibb County school to beat Westside.

Lincoln County 34, Tattnall 28, OT

The game was a nail-biter from the start. Adam Musolf’s 30-yard field goal to end the half gave Tattnall a 17-14 lead. He added another midway through the third for a 20-14 lead, but Lincoln County got a 58-yard score and led 21-20 after three. Jamal Marshall put Tattnall up with a 16-yard run, and the conversion made it 28-21 with 7:19 left in the game. The visitors answered with 4:50 to go. Miles Morris’ interception inside the 30 with less than a minute left forced overtime. The Trojans fumbled it out of the end zone to turn it over. Lincoln County answered with its own fumble, but the Red Devils recovered it in the end zone for the win.

North Cobb Christian 27, Monticello 23

Northeast 19, Manchester 6

The Raiders gave new head coach and alum Jeremy Wiggins his first win since taking over, and it was a good old-school one. Manchester is ranked fourth in the AJC’s Class A public poll and eighth in the Georgia Sports Writers Association’s overall Class A ranking. The Raiders ran for 279 yards to control the ball and kept the Blue Devils in check, and to their lowest scoring output for a regular-season game since a 7-6 loss to Greenville on Sept. 7, 2012. They lost 10-6 in last year’s second round of the Class A public playoffs to Mount Zion-Carroll, which beat AA Lamar County 34-0 to open the season. Quarterback Nolan Ussery carried 16 times for 150 yards and a score and Terrious Miles went for 127 yards and a TD on 15 carries. It’s the first win for Northeast over a ranked team in any classification since beating No. 8/9/AAA Mary Persons 20-13 on Oct. 31, 2003, a year after Wiggins graduated from Northeast.

Northside 41, Whitewater 3

Northside ended early any thoughts of a third straight loss, Daniel Neal with two TD receptions from Jadin Daniels, from 25 and 74 yards, for a 14-0 lead with 5:42 left in the first quarter. The Eagles about doubled it to 28-3 at halftime. Daniels went wild, with 153 rushing yards on 7 tries, and an 8-for-12 night passing for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Neal’s only two catches went for scores, and 99 yards. The Eagles averaged 8.3 yards per play, helping overcome 10 penalties for 105 yards. Whitewater lost two fumbles, and Northside’s defense had two sacks and forced a passing game into a 3-for-17 game.

Peach County 49, Houston County 14

The host Trojans led 28-7 at halftime, and the Bears cut the deficit in half before Peach County pulled away.

Perry 43, Monroe 0

The Panthers went on the road and got their first shutout since 27-0 over Howard on Oct. 7, 2016. It tied the last 43-point win, 49-6 over Howard at the end of the 2012 regular season.

Stratford 28, Washington-Wilkes 27

Stratford led 21-19 at halftime and got an early third-quarter touchdown catch from Dell Sikes to extend the lead. W-W answered shortly thereafter with a touchdown and conversion to pull within one. The Tigers lost two key second-half fumbles, and Jamie O’Quinn came up with a clutch late interception.

Taylor County 49, Central Talbotton 0

Warner Robins 48, Baldwin 14

A week off didn’t put any rust on the Demons, who rolled to a 28-7 halftime lead. Warner Robins has scored 40, 50, and 48 points in its first three games.

Warren County 42, Twiggs County 0

The Cobras have yet to score this season.

Washington County 55, Greenbrier 7

The Golden Hawks hadn’t beaten a bigger-classification school this bad since hammering 4A Baldwin 56-7 on Sept. 13, 2013, two weeks after popping 5A Grovetown by the same score.

Veterans 21, Statesboro 0

Veterans recorded its second shutout of the season, which last happened in 2013, the Warhawks’ region championship season.

GISA/GICAA

Gatewood 29, Brentwood 12

The teams were even on first downs, and Gatewood had only six more yards on eight more plays. The Gators pulled away late, with 15 fourth-quarter points after taking a 14-6 lead into the final period. They got a 15-yard score from Yale Stapp at 8:10 and a 1-yarder from Stapp with 2:34 left. Brentwood squeezed in a 3-yard touchdown from Schley Moore with 6:02 left. Luke Haley had 139 yards on 14 carries for Gatewood, and Colby Johnson topped Brentwood’s ground game with 86 yards on 11 rushes.

Crisp 40, Covenant 0

John Milledge 31, Trinity Christian 20

The fourth quarter sure was an adventure, with 35 points scored, and needed by the homestanding Trojans, who watched a 10-6 lead entering the fourth turn into a 20-17 deficit after a 64-yard pass play for a touchdown – and the conversion – and then a 4-yard run. The Trojans regained the lead on Amaad Foston’s 1-yard run, and got some breathing room with a 60-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Jacob Prestwood. Hunter Knowles had a field goal and hit all four PATs. Foston ran wild, for 255 yards for John Milledge, now 3-0. Brandon Bellflower had 137 yards in receptions. TCS’s David Coleman passed for 235 yards.

Westfield 49, CFCA 13

The teams combined for two completions on 11 tries for five yards each. Westfield racked up 353 yards on 27 carries, holding CFCA to 144 on 30. Westfield got touchdowns from six players, and added a first-quarter safety.
