Georgia Tech 63, Bowling Green 17

just read this daily.JPG

Three Yellow Jackets – including Northside alum Tobias Oliver – scored two touchdowns each in the rout.

Quarterback TaQuon Marshall also had a good passing day, completing 5 of 6 for 160 yards as the Jackets broke a three-game losing streak.

Bowling Green quarterback Jarret Doege was 27 of 44 for 305 yards and a touchdown, with two interceptions.

Tech’s defense held the Falcons to 63 rushing yards, which was one yard more than how far Oliver ran for a touchdown late in the game.

The Jackets led 28-10 at halftime, and pulled away early in the third, Jordan Mason getting a 33-yard score. A 21-yard fumble return by Antwan Owens set up Jerry Howard’s short run for a 42-10 lead at the 7:44 mark of the third quarter.

Oliver led all rushers with 116 yards against a team that was paid $900,000 to play. A confidence boost for Tech was fumbling only once, and recovering it.

Clinton Lynch became the first Tech player to have 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in his career.

Mercer 48, VMI 38

The third quarter was good to Mercer, which scored twice to open up a 21-point lead on the hosts.

The fourth quarter was mighty stressful for Mercer, which watched VMI storm back to within three with more than two minutes left, but Tyray Devezin made for a nice ride home with a 34-yard run up the middle to seal it with 59 seconds left.

B.J. Bohler almost added icing with a pick-6 15 seconds later, but the the touchdown was nullified by an illegal block.

VMI took an early lead, only for Mercer to get two field goals and a touchdown in the final 4:32 of the first quarter for a 13-7 lead.

Tee Mitchell scored the second of his three touchdowns for a 20-7 lead, but VMI came back to 20-14. Stephen Houzah took in a 55-yard TD pass from Kaelan Riley, and the Keydets cut it back to seven with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took only two minutes, making it 27-20 Mercer at the half.

The Bears then seemingly took control with two touchdowns in a span of 4:22. But the Keydets got two on a safety early in the fourth, then another touchdown a little more than two minutes later.

A 3-yard pass from Reece Udinski to Kris Thornton and the conversion pass pulled VMI to within 41-38 with 2:02 left in the game.

VMI outgained Mercer 191-80 in the fourth quarter on 11 more plays.

Riley, last year’s starter who lost his job a few weeks ago to Robert Riddle, who was lost late in last week’s game to a collarbone injury, was 14 of 24 for 248 yards and two scores with no interceptions.

Devezin had 155 yards on 14 carries and Mitchell 129 on 25.

Washington County alum Will Coneway led the Mercer defense with 11 tackles. LeMarkus Bailey had two tackles for loss.

The teams combined for 1,005 yards (516-489 Mercer). VMI’s Udinski was a remarkable 37 of 70 for 434 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Virginia-Lynchburg 31, Fort Valley State 14

Fort Valley’s first home game of the season was as bad a Fort Valley home game in a long time.

Virginia University-Lynchburg, a National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association program that revived football in 2011 and is on its fifth head coach, marched out to a 31-7 lead against the defending SIAC champions, pulling away with a score late in the third quarter and in the final third of the fourth.

The start of the game was delayed after about 90 minutes for lightning.

The 1-4 Wildcats scored early in the third quarter on Jeremy McCants’ 3-yard run and PAT from Macon County grad Abisai Guitierrez to pull within 17-7.

The Dragons sealed it with a 99-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Stewart to Javon Green with 1:55 left in the third. FVSU’s final score came with 4:25 left, an 8-yard pass from Garrel Quainton (West Laurens) to Jamari Clark.

According to FVSU stats, the Wildcats had 10 more first downs, 75 more yards rushing, 32 more yards passing, and ran 19 more plays. But those stats also had FVSU with 18 penalties for 163 yards.

Former Northside standout Willie Jordan led FVSU with 60 yards on 14 carries. Cam Young of Dodge County again led the Wildcat defense, one of three players with seven tackles.

Georgia Southern 28, Arkansas State 21

A 14-point fourth quarter and stingy defense lifted Georgia Southern to its biggest win in a few years.

Washington County grad Logan Hunt had three sacks and nine tackles, helping hold ASU to 117 yards rushing. GSU ran for 348 yards on 49 carries, countering the Red Wolves’ 376 yards through the air on 38-of-51 passing.
