Falcons’ offense gets going, Atlanta holds off Carolina

          Matt Ryan outrushed Cam Newton.

          And there it is.

Ryan threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Atlanta held off Carolina 31-24.

The Panthers had a final shot, but a pass slipped thorugh the hands of D.J. Moore, double covered, in the end zone on the game’s final play.

Ryan’s 1-yard keeper gave Atlanta a 24-10 lead early in the third, and then he powered and spun in from the 8 to put the lead back to two touchdowns.

Tevin Coleman had 107 yards on 16 carries as Atlanta’s main back, with Devonta Freeman out.

Georgia Southern’s Lunsford the Macon Touchdown Club speaker

Georgia Southern head coach Chad Lunsford is the guest speaker at the Macon Touchdown Club.

Southwest is the featured high school.

Lunsford was named interim head coach at Georgia Southern near the end of last season after the firing to Tyson Summers. On Nov. 28, he was given the full-time job, having been promoted after his second stint as an assistant.

Lunsford is from Elberton, but graduated from Georgia College, and began his coaching career down the road at Georgia Military College, serving as a student assistant, then running backs coach and then linebackers coach.

After two seasons at Appalachian State, he spent three seasons at Georgia Southern - 2003-05 - as running backs and slotback coach.

Lunsford followed the 2006-07 year at Griffin by returning to GMC as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach for two years. Lunsford was hired by former GSU head coach Jeff Monken in 2013 after four years in football administration at Auburn.

Lunsford was a nominee n 2016 for the Broyles Award for the top assistant in FBS football. He was promoted to assistant head coach before the 2017 season.

          The Eagles are 1-2 after Saturday’s 38-7 loss at then-No. 2 Clemson.

Lunsford is married to Tippy (Hyde), a graduate of Tattnall.

The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members, who needn't be accompanied by a member.
