Mercer men’s basketball schedule set

Trips to Florida and to the site of the school’s greatest athletics accomplishment highlight the Mercer men’s basketball schedule for 2018-19.

A game on the Atlanta Hawks home court and resuming an in-state and former conference rivalry await the Bears as well.

The Bears open the season at UAB and welcome Division III Piedmont in the home opener (although it’s an exhibition game for the Lions). Mercer then visits Georgia State, a longtime old Trans America Athletic Conference and A-Sun rival.

Home games against Tennessee-Martin and Maryland-Eastern Shore follow, and then Mercer is back at PNC Arena, locale of the Bears’ 78-71 win over Duke on March 21, 2014. It’s the home for N.C. State

NAIA Brewton-Parker comes to Hawkins Arena, as does Georgia Southern after the Bears have a couple road games. Mercer is at Florida on Dec. 18, and takes on Harvard at Philips Arena on Dec. 29.

“There are a lot of different types of teams we will face that will give us an opportunity to find out about our team,” head coach Bob Hoffman said in a release. “The road schedule, to me, is always the thing that gives you the opportunity to let you know what you know and what you don't know about your team.”

Mercer finished 19-15 last season, 11-7 in the Southern Conference and earning a spot in the College Basketball Invitational.

Hoffman is entering his 11th season leading the Bears.

Georgia College women’s hoops schedule set

A dozen home games await the Georgia College women’s basketball team.

The Bobcats finished 18-12 last year, the team’s most wins since 2013-14. They return three of their top four scorers.

The season starts on Nov. 9 in Morrow against Wingate of the South Atlantic Conference, followed a day later by Anderson in the SAC/PBC challenge. Georgia College also plays Carson-Newman and West Florida on consecutive days in December at North Georgia.

Albany State visits on Dec. 8.
