Falcons falter in Pittsburgh

          Pittsburgh scored twice in a two-minute span late in the third quarter to take control en route to a 41-17 win over visiting Atlanta.

          The Steelers added a fumble recovery in the end zone with 3:35 left to seal it.

          Atlanta did get within 10 on Ito Smith’s 2-yard run three minutes into the fourth, but Antonio Brown took in Ben Roethlisberger’s pass for a 47-yard touchdown less than three minutes later for a 17-point lead.

          Atlanta rushed for 62 yards on 19 tries, and Matt Ryan was 26 of 38 for 285 yards and a score, but he was dumped six times for 43 yards in losses. James Conner ran 21 times for 120 yards and two touchdowns for the Steelers, and Roethlisberger was 19 of 29 for 250 yards, three scores, one pick, and no sacks.

          The Falcons fell to 1-4.

          Former Wilkinson County standout Bud Dupree had six tackles, one for loss.

Macon TD Club honors trio from Southwest, Howard, and Tattnall

          A Patriot, Husky, and Trojans are the latest Macon Touchdown Player of the Week.

          Southwest quarterback Malique Frazier is the back of the week after going 22-of-44 for 210 yards and three scores plus 77 rushing yards and a TD in the double-overtime loss to Northeast.

          Howard linebacker Isaiah Edwards is the lineman of the week after racking up seven tackles, a sack, caused fumble, fumble recovery for a TD, and a pass breakup in the region win at Perry.

          Tattnall’s Wes Allen is the special teams player of the week after send half of his kickoffs into the end zone, and then blocking a punt and PAT in the 21-19 win over Stratford.

         

Radio host Oliver the Macon Touchdown Club speaker

          Radio host Chuck Oliver is the featured speaker Monday night at the Macon Touchdown Club.

          Central and Tattnall are the featured high schools.

          The Atlanta native graduated from South Gwinnett in 1986, attended Auburn, and then began a coaching and teaching career.

          He spent five years coaching the defensive line at his alma mater, then became a writer and author.

          In 2000, AM-790 in Atlanta hired him for sports talk, and that role expanded multiple times. He joined 680 The Fan in 2008 and co-hosted a show with Matt Chernoff while also broadcasting college football games and serving as an SEC analyst for CBS.

          Nominated for four Emmys in various roles, he has hosted The Chuck Oliver Show n Southern Sports Today Network for several years.

          The club meets at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, in the Rumford Center, at 304 Pierce Ave. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and the program to begin around 7. Cost is $30 for non-members, who needn't be accompanied by a member.
