          The Greyhound defense kept Northside quarterback Jadin Daniels from breaking free, and the offense made the plays. They led 14-0 on TD passes from Hunter Costlow to Caden Mutchler and Jontavis Robertson (66 yards) before the Eagles got a 32-yard Cory Munson field goal late in the first half.

           Tubby McCall’s long pick-6 early in the third quarter got the Eagles going. Briefly. Costlow connected with Robertson for an 85-yard touchdown for a 21-10 lead.

          Daniels threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to get the Eagles within four at the 8:04 mark of the third quarter, and then gave Northside the lead with a 35-yarder to Kabron Little with 4:54 left in the third.

           Jones County came right back with another Costlow-to-Mutchler hookup, and it was a 28-24 Greyhounds lead inside the final minute of the third quarter.

          Back and forth it went in the fourth quarter. Jones County got a big pass to the 15, then settled for a field goal from Evan West after a big defensive play from McCall, to make it 31-24.

         Northside was flagged for a roughing the kicker, and Jones County took the points off, and then Maleek Wooten sealed it with a short run with 1:33 left. Northside added a field goal in the final seconds.

          The Greyhounds had 469 yards of total offense to 303 for the Eagles, Costlow going 17 for 28 for 301 yards with four touchdowns and one pick, Semaj Ingram getting 162 yards on 19 carries. Robertson caught eight passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

           Daniels was 21 of 26 for 219 yards and two scores and no interceptions.

In Central Georgia

Aquinas 34, Wilkinson County 12

Bleckley County 35, Telfair County 26

          The Royals rolled out to a 28-0 halftime lead, only for Telfair County to storm back before falling short. Nykeem Farrow, among the top rushers in Central Georgia a year ago with 1,322 yards and 20 touchdowns, was huge, with 269 yards on 29 carries and two touchdowns.

 

Dodge County 22, West Laurens 10

          The Indians kept the Raiders out of the end zone late, also getting a key fourth-quarter interception from Javon McNeal to end another West Laurens possession. The Indians never trailed, and the Raiders’ points came in the fourth quarter.

Dublin 20, Swainsboro 13

           Rodriguez Martin threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Strickland for the lead, and then Martin kept it for the insurance score less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. The Irish trailed 10-6 at halftime before taking the lead for good on the 19-yard pass at the 2:41 mark of the third quarter. Dublin ran 45 times for 246 yards and was outgained in total offense 298-265 by the Tigers. Conteveyas Mitchell had 72 rushing yards for Dublin, which was outdone by a yard a carry by Swainsboro, which was stymied into settling for two field goals.

George Walton 35, Stratford 0

          The visitors led only 7-0 after a quarter, scored on a long run and followed a fourth-down conversion with a 9-yard TD run for a 21-0 halftime lead. It was the most points given up by Stratford since Aquinas scored 48 on Nov. 6, 2015, and the biggest margin of defeat since 45-14 to Mt. Paran Christian in the first round of the 2014 playoffs.

 

Howard 46, Central 26

          The Huskies improved to 2-1 for the second straight year, taking control for a bit and then holding off a little Central rally. Howard led 20-6 at halftime, and 34-12 midway through the third quarter. The Chargers cut it to eight late in the third, and the Huskies returned the lead to double figures. Javarsia Meadows took over main rushing duties for Howard with 237 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. QB Quintan Sewell added 60 yards on 7 carries, completing 4 of 7 for 63 yards and a score. PK Elizabeth Rodenroth hit 4 of 6 PATs.

 

Houston County 62, Rutland 17

          The Bears led 14-3 after one and 28-3 at halftime to improve to 3-0. It’s tied for the second-most points in program history (62-30 over Warner Robins early in 2014) and is the fourth-largest margin of victory.

          The Bulldogs again beat up on a bigger school. Rico Harden scored for 54 yards out less than three minutes into the game, and Quen Wilson scored on  19-yarder a little more than three minutes later en route to a 21-0 lead after one. Then Wilson scored, then J.T. Hartage connected with DeAdrek Alford for a 74-yard score, for a 35-6 halftime lead. A blocked punt sent up a second-half score, and Wyatt Currie added a pick-6

          The Cavs had to battle on the road, trailing 9-7 at halftime after a scoreless first quarter. Dexter Williams’ 32-yard scoring pass to Walker Schofield and Ethan Aler’s kick were quick-strike third quarter points, less than a minute into the third quarter. Williams connected with Micah Hattaway from 6 yards out at the 4:42 mark of the third for the 12-point lead. Mount de Sales’ defense then held Pinecrest at bay until a 12-yard touchdown pass with 1:22 left. Williams was 9 for 19 for 94 yards and two touchdowns, running 25 times for 153 yards. Conner Gilbert had an interception, and Landon Jernigan and Matt Freehan recovered fumbled. The Cavs D stiffened when it counted, despite the hosts outgaining the visitors 302-283 yards.

 

 

Perry 30, Westside 27

          Perry got a field goal from Jorga Batiste with 4:51 left in the game to break a 21-all tie, then the Panthers recovered a muffed punt in the end zone with 1:54 left in the game. The Seminoles managed a field goal, but that was it.

 

Mount Vernon Presbyterian 41, FPD 17

          MVP connected on big plays throughout the night to take control, and the Vikings couldn’t counter. The visitors scored on passes of 64, 15, and 16 yard, and runs of 2, 30, and 34 yards en route to 470 yards in total offense to 238 yards for the young Vikings. Quarterback Coleman Cauley ran 20 times for 75 yards, and was 6 of 15 for 115 yards and two scoring passes, both to Harrison Aulds, who had four catches for 108 yards.

 

Lee County 33, Peach County 0 (weather shortened, fourth quarter)

          The game started late and ended early because of weather. The state’s top-ranked 6A team led only 7-0 after one and added a second-quarter score. Then Jammie Robinson, a transfer from Crisp County, took the third-quarter kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead, en route to a 33-0 lead after three. The game was called at the 9:02 mark of the fourth because of lightning.

Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg 45, Tattnall 27

          TCS scored on its first two possessions in the first three minutes of the game, and added a kickoff return for a touchdown late in the first. The Trojans kept it to a two-possession game much of the night, until the 5:24 mark of the third quarter when the Lions started gaining control.

 

Turner County 30, Taylor County 0

          The rebuilding Vikings were shut out for the first time since falling 41-0 to Marion County on Oct. 31, 2014, during a 1-8-1 season.

Upson-Lee 33, Harris County 28

          Harris County took a 7-0 lead, but the Knights stormed back and took a 27-14 lead. Harris County pulled within six with 5:56 left in the third, but Daymon Thomas’s rushing score put the Knights up 33-21 with 1:46 left in the third. Harris County scored with 4:30 left, and that was it.

Veterans 38, Baldwin 30

          The Warhawks’ defense was superb, holding the Braves to one offensive touchdown. But Baldwin made it stunningly close with two pick-6s and a safety, enough to lead 30-24 early in the fourth with 16 points in three minutes. The Warhawks went up 31-30 after Julian Barnes’ second score, a 4-yarder with just more than 10 minutes left in the game after they converted a fourth-and-inches on their side of the field, and added insurance with around six minutes left.

          The passing game was the difference. John Milledge outgained Brentwood 241-197 on the round, but the 3A Trojans were 12 of 15 for 197 yards to 17 yards for the 2A War Eagles. Ironically, John Milledge took a 38-0 halftime lead on three rushing touchdowns, plus punt return and a field goal. Gabe Anglin had 13 tackles for the War Eagles.
