Friday night dinner for Kirby Smart, Georgia’s football team, and its fans was substantially tastier than expected.

They found out that the NCAA had granted a waiver for receiver Demetris Robertson, allowing the Savannah high school product and transfer from California to play for the 2018 Bulldogs.

Robertson announced in June that he was leaving Cal for personal reasons.

Robertson was a highly touted receiver out of Savannah Christian, where he underwent assorted administrative and transfer issues regarding a transfer from Savannah Country Day, in 2016 and stunned the Southeast by picking Cal over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Notre Dame, among others, after committing to and decommitting from Alabama.

This time, he picked Georgia over Texas, Mississippi, West Virginia, and Alabama, to name a few leaders.

He was a freshman All-American in 2016 after catching 50 passes, but suffered a season-ending injury early in 2017.

Robertson said he was leaving for personal reasons. Then in mid-July, he decided on Georgia, immediately leading to hopes that he might somehow be eligible in 2018.

Reports quickly surfaced that his mother’s declining health – one reason many were surprised he picked Cal – was the reason for his transfer.

From the Athens Banner-Herald after his announcement:

According to insiders, ‘Robertson is transferring because his mother’s illness has gotten very bad, and she may pass in the next 6-18 months.’”

He becomes the latest 5-star to suit up for Georgia.
