Sunday's Braves Report: Newcomb goes from celebrating to apologizing, after offensive social media posts surface

Newcomb goes from celebrated to apologizing
Not long after coming within a strike of a no-hitter, Atlanta pitcher Sean Newcomb was in apology mode when offensive social media posts from when he was about 18 years old surfaced.
The tweets are considered racist, sexist, and anti-gay.
Not long after he talked to the media about his career day, he saw the tweets had resurfaced, and came back to the clubhouse to apologize.
During the All-Star game, a similar situation developed for Milwaukee pitcher Josh Hader.
Newcomb just misses a no-hitter
A strike away.
That’s what Sean Newcomb was from the Braves’ first no-hitter since 1994.
Newcomb was about 10 months old.
Alas, Chris Taylor’s liner just got past third baseman Johan Comargo with two strikes and two outs to break up Newcomb’s gem in the 4-1 win.
Newcomb threw 134 pitches, 81 strikes, in his longest stint of the season, coming out right after the hit.
He gave way to Dan Winkler, who surrendered an RBI hit after Taylor went to second on defensive indifference. Winkler got the final out moments later.
Kent Mercker no-hit the Dodgers in L.A. on April 8, 1994, three seasons after he teamed with Mark Wohlers and Alejandro Pena to do it to San Diego.
Before that 1991 effort, the Braves’ last no-hitter was 1973, so the span remains two dozen years.
Nick Markakis went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Ender Inciarte added two hits for Atlanta, which got two in the first and two in the third.
