Mercer golfer qualifies for U.S Amateur

A 5-under-par out at Jennings Mill Country Club qualified Mercer junior Spencer Ball for the U.S. Amateur Championship.

The national tournament is Aug. 13-19 at Pebble Beach.

Ball made six birdies en route to a second-round 69, a one-shot improvement over the first round.

The top five finishers made the national am, and Ball finished third out of 111 participants.

Ball, who won the Yamaha Atlanta Open in June, is a Lambert grad who transferred from Armstrong State.

He tied for 11th last week in the state amateur championship, and had a 73.9 stroke average last year for Mercer.
