Florida State ends Georgia’s season in WCWS

Another team from Florida brought the offense against Georgia in the Women’s College World Series.

Florida State scored five runs in two middle innings to top Georgia 7-2 Saturday in an elimination game in Oklahoma City.

Georgia ends the season at 48-12

As did Florida in the Gators’ 11-3 win on Thursday, the Seminoles were able to get to Mary Wilson Avant.

The three-run fourth was enough, FSU getting a walk, steal, single, walk, two-run single, and then an RBI fly to right.

Three straight singles led to two runs in the fifth.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s offense struggled. The Bulldogs were  retired in order in the first, but got runners on in the next four innings before another 1-2-3 slump in the sixth.

Georgia matched Florida with seven hits on Thursday, but the Gators got three homers. The Seminoles didn’t have the power, getting only one extra-base hit, and barely missed a mercy-rule win in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the bases loaded. They outhit the Bulldogs 8-5.

Avant fanned four and walked six, Justice Milz getting two RBI and Alysen Febrey two hits for Georgia.

Georgia hammers Campbell in baseball regional

Campbell belted a pair of homers, and normally, that would make a difference.

Georgia had twice as many, so, nope, they didn’t.

A seven-run fourth put Georgia in control en route to an 18-5 win over Campbell in their NCAA Regional baseball game Saturday afternoon.

The game was pushed back from Friday, and Georgia was apparently quite rested.

The Camels led 3-2 after three, and did add two runs after the Bulldogs had put 12 up on the board.

Houston County alum Tony Locey got the win in four innings of middle relief, allowing two runs and three hits.

Nine Bulldogs got hits and 10 drove in runs, led by Adam Sasser’s 3-for-4 game with 2 RBI and Tucker Bradley’s four RBI on 2-for-4 hitting. Mason Meadows, Michael Curry, and C.J. Smith each had two hits for the Bulldogs, Curry and Sasser scoring three times each.

It was Georgia’s highest run total since a 22-9 win over Georgia Southern to open the season.

The Bulldogs face Troy, a 6-0 winner over Duke, on Sunday, weather moving things around.

Around the nation: Texas Tech popped New Mexico State 9-2 Friday night, with Veterans alum going 2-for-5. The Red Raiders play Louisville at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Stetson properly opened up as a host with an 8-3 win Friday night over Hartford.

Host Florida State was stunned 7-6 by Southern Conference champ Samford Friday night, as the only No. 1 seed to lose on the first day.

No. 10 Clemson survived Morehead State with a 4-3 walk-off in 11 innings, and Stanford escaped Wright State 4-3 in 13 innings.

Columbus State loses nailbiter in national finale

A run in the sixth was the difference as Augustana, S.D., edged Columbus State 3-2 Saturday for the NCAA Division II national baseball championship.

Augustana was seeded fifth and CSU second.

Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, and the Cougars tied it in the fifth.

The lead run came in the sixth on a hit batter, grounder, and single to right.

The Cougars went down in order in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, stranded a one-out runner in the eighth, and were retired 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Columbus State fiished 48-15, Augustana 52-9.
