Sunday's Daily News 'n Notes: Georgia College gets regular-season title, prep playoffs up, Mercer wins, and more

Sunday's Central Georgia - and of interest to Central Georgia - news and notes, compiled from staff reports, email reports, the web, and social media.

Georgia College clinches Peach Belt regular-season title

The 13th-ranked Bobcats had to sweat out a late rally a little bit, but beat Augusta 9-5 to clinch the Peach Belt regular-season championship.

It's the program's fourth overall and first since 2010, and comes in Jason Eller's second full year as head coach. He was interim head coach for part of 2016.

Georgia College improved to 33-9 overall and 24-3 in conference play, setting a program mark with PBC wins and nearing the conference record of 25, set in 2002 by Kennesaw State.

The Bobcats host Clark on Tuesday, and have three more conference games and seven overall left. Senior Day is May 5 against Winston-Salem State. The conference tournament starts on May 11 in St. Augustine, Fla.

High school playoffs getting underway

The GHSA tennis postseason has started, and is joined this week by baseball and soccer.

The GHSA will make official on Monday the Class A pairings after appeals, but it won't change Central Georgia's representation.

The full pairings for all three sports and some scheduling is up in This Week's Coverage. Teams should email playoff information to centralgasports@gmail.com as soon as it's finalized.

College Baseball: Mercer starts winning streak

After a stretch of feeble offense, Mercer put a dozen on Western Carolina for a 12-0 win, Mercer's second in a row.

It took the Bears' bats awhile to expand on a 2-0 lead after six, but they scored five in the seventh and eighth while Christian Van went seven strong innings with seven strikeouts and three walks in the two-hitter.

College Baseball: Pitching falls apart again for Yellow Jackets

North Carolina scored seven runs against five pitchers in the seventh inning en route to a 10-3 win over Georgia Tech.
