Central's Toombs retires on top with Chargers

Georgia's Maten named top player in SEC by AP

          Yante Maten returned to Georgia for his senior season, and things haven't gone well for the Bulldogs. But individually, Maten had a solid year, and became the second Bulldog in recent years, joining Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, in taking the honor as AP's conference player of the year.

 

Poll watch

          Fresh off their dominant visit to the Southern Conference tournament, Mercer's women jumped two spots in the USA Today coaches basketball poll to 23rd, a spot behind N.C. State.

          The Bears have 70 points, behind 148 for the Wolfpack and ahead of 40 for DePaul. Mercer stayed at No. 25 in the AP poll, 6 points behind LSU.

          Middle Georgia State's baseball team, off to a 17-6 start, is No. 15 in the first NAIA poll of the season. Georgia Gwinnett is NO. 2, and POint Park is 22nd and Reinhardt 23rd.

          The Knights were 15th in the preseason poll.

 

Signings update

          Cam  Holden commited recently to Gulf Coast State college, and the Mary Persons standout followed up by signing with the Commodores.

          Holden was a 2,000-point career scorer for the Bulldogs, and helped them to top-10 seasons the past two years. He suffered a hand injury only two days before the GHSA tournament started.

          The 6-5 wing averaged 28.2 points a game and led the Bulldogs (23-5)  in most other stat categories.

Honor Roll

          Central Georgia Tech's Michael Laster, a sophomore from Manhattan, N.Y., the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division I region player of the year.

          Laster averaged 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.1 assists for the Titans, who host Albany Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the GCAA tournament.

          Teammate Anyeuri Castillo made the second team and all-freshman team, joined in the latter group by Jawaun Daniels. ...

          Mercer has the Southern Conference's pitcher of the week again.

          This time, it's senior Jill McElderry, who had two complete-game wins.
