A second high school basketball team started a search for a new basketball coach on Tuesday.

FPD announced Tuesday afternoon that boys head coach Michael Walton was stepping down. Earlier Tuesday, it was announced that Central girls coach Sheila Toombs was retiring.

“The past four years leading the FPD basketball program have been a wonderful experience,” Walton said in a statement released by the school. “FPD is a special place, made so by its people.

“Though the Lord is leading me into my next chapter, I will forever be a supporter of the Viking Nation.”

          The Vikings went 6-15, 14-11, 16-8, and 11-2 – according to Maxpreps – in Walton’s four years.

Walton went to FPD after three years as head coach at Wesleyan College. He was an assistant at South Carolina State, then director of basketball operations.

He was a four-year basketball letterman at Rice, after graduating from Mount de Sales, where is a member of the school’s hall of fame for his basketball and football career.

Walton succeeded Michael Brooker, who led the Vikings for six seasons, and is now head coach at Lake Oconee Academy.
