Macon Sports Hall of Fame set to add eight new members

Golf, basketball, recreation, baseball, football, and soccer will be covered by the indication of the latest class for the Macon Sports Hall of Fame.

Charlie Anderson, Eddie Ashley, Shana Askew Daniels, Bobby Hix, Grant Serafy, James Stockslager, Theron Ussery, and Catherine Rader Woods are the latest inductees. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. on May 10 at the Macon Coliseum.

Anderson was perhaps the top boys basketball player during the short span that Mark Smith High existed before joining two other schools to become Northeast, leading the Bulldogs to a Class 3A state title.

Ashley coached baseball, football, and basketball in Bibb County, working at Northeast, Southwest and Southeast, and served as the county’s athletics director for several years.

Askew-Daniels was a standout girls basketball player at Southwest, earning all-region, all-city, and all-area honors, as well as honorable mention All-American in 1996-97.

Hix is one of the top golf instructors in the area and state, recognized often by the PGA and other golf associations. A Stratford and Mercer grad, he works at Idle Hour.

Serafy built Stratford’s soccer programs into GISA powers before moving on to Mercer, where he led the Bears to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008.

Stockslager has been involved in youth swimming in Macon since the early 1980s and is perhaps the godfather of local youth and high school swimming, all as a volunteer.

Ussery has had an immeasurable impact on recreation in Macon and Bibb County, as a driving force for anything and everything from football to softball, Henderson Stadium to Central City Park and other local recreation locales.

Rader Woods was a girls basketball standout at FPD, helping the Vikings to three straight GISA state titles, starting in 1991, before playing four years at Wofford.
