GHSA wrestling: West Laurens second in 4A, area favorites fare well; results, 3A-2A-A qualifier list

          West Laurens is off to a good start, pretty close to what the Raiders could have hoped for after the first day of action at the GHSA state wrestling meet at the Macon Coliseum.

          The Raiders are in second place in Class 4A with 85 points, 16.5 points ahead of Troup County and 17.5 points behind Jefferson.

          Veterans is seventh in 5A with 45 points, only 23.5 points from second-place Ola.

          Action Thursday started with the four largest classes, with Classes 3A, 2A, and A starting Friday at 10 a.m.

          Ben Deal had a pair of pins for West Laurens, one in less than a minute and the other in less than two. Joseph Horne did the same at 285, one in 51 seconds but the other taking nearly five minutes.

          Horne is well aware at Upson-Lee’s Lazavier Moore grabbed a pair of pins. The duo had a classic championship bout in the sectionals and are on target to meet again.

          West Laurens is without some guaranteed points from last year, when the Raiders finished third and had a boost from 106-pound champion Vincent Mannella. He is now at Woodward Academy, and won his first two rounds in Class 4A.

          Familiar faces advanced with two wins.

          Defending champions and runners-up in their respective weights and classes Dashawn Farber of Northside, Reed Vincent of Houston County, and

Julian Farber of Veterans rolled to a pair of easy wins, each getting a pin along the way.

          Ethan Martin (106), Francis Morrissey (138) and Kevin Reynolds (152) had power wins for Veterans.

          Trey Bonner of Jones County won with a pair of mighty quick pins, 61 seconds and 14 seconds.

          Among Central Georgia’s smaller classifications, Dodge County and Mount de Sales have four wrestlers and Lamar County three. Those qualifiers and their records are below Thursday’s results.
