West Laurens took home four section championships and qualified another seven for the state meet in the weekend’s GHSA traditional wrestling sectional tournaments.
Houston County, Veterans, and Dodge County each had two wrestlers finish first in their respective classes, with Northside, Warner Robins, Jones County, Northeast, and Dublin recording individual sectional championships.
Veterans had six other wrestlers qualify, while Howard and Upson-Lee will send six on and Perry five.
One of the top matches of the day came in Class 4A 285, where West Laurens’ Joseph Horne nipped Upson-Lee’s Lazavier Moore – in a battle of two of Central Georgia’s top wrestlers throughout their high school careers – 1-0 for first.
The top 8 for classes 7A, 6A, 5A, and 4A advance to the state meet, and top 4 in 3A, 2A, and A.
The state traditional tournament is Feb. 8-10 at the Macon Coliseum. Tickets are $7 for Thursday and $10 for Friday and Saturday, with a three-day pass available for $24.
