No doubt Lazavier Moore and Joseph Horne have known each other for awhile.

After all, they are two of Central Georgia’s elite upper-weight wrestlers.

This year, they’re in the same weight class. After cruising through their first three matches – Horne by falls of 1:26, 1:19 and 1:36 and Moore by wins of 11-1 and 6-2 with a fall in 1:57 - they engaged in a major battle in sectionals.

          Horne won 1-0.

          Here they go again.

Moore and Horne will go at it in the Class 4A finale at 285 pounds in a marquee meeting of Central Georgians in the GHSA state traditional wrestling tournament at The Macon Coliseum.

Moore finished fourth last year at 220 after winning his first two matches, eventually losing 1-0.

Horne, ironically, also finished fourth, at 285, after winning his first two. He was pinned in 3:10 in the bout for third.

So Saturday’s showdown should be serious.

Action begins at 10 a.m. with fifth-place matches, and at 11:30 a.m. with third-place matches.

The opening ceremony is at 2:30 p.m., and finals begin at 3 p.m.

It was an odd, and rough, first day for the Central Georgia competitors in the three smallest classes.

None won their first match, but the majority will be wrestling for fifth place. Eight went two-and-out, but a few more are back in action Saturday for third or fifth place.

The only Central Georgian in position to defend a state title is Northside’s Dashawn Farber, going for the 138 title after winning at 132 last year.

Also eyeing a state title is Veterans’ Francis Morrissey at 138 in 5A. It’s a nice turnaround for the sophomore, who qualified last year and was 46-9 entering the meet but had to forfeit his matches.

Jones County’s Trey Bonner has won three straight by pins – in 1:01, :14, and 1:45 – and goes for the 5A 285 championship against Seven Richards of Cass, who started the tournament 41-2.

West Laurens’ Logan McGowan tries again for a title after finishing second last year at 4A 120, now at 126. Teammate Spencer Dacus at 220 is going for first, as is Greyson Clark at 138.

The Raiders enter the final day in second place with 169 points, behind Jefferson’s 198.5. Veterans is in sixth in 5A.
