The defending state champs had little trouble in repeating against the Trojans, who worked their way through the bracket as the No. 7 seed, knocking off two higher seeds in the three state games.

GHSA Semifinals

Class AAA: Baldwin 62, Fayette County 55

The defending state champs will get a chance to defend that title after getting 20-point games from Janaye Walker and Kassidy Neal, Walker with 18 rebounds and Neal with 8 boards. Suri Clark added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Fayette County led 27-23 at halftime behind 14 points from Journy Scott, one above her average. The Bravettes took the lead 29-27 with 6:48 left in the third on Suri Clark’s bucket in the paint off an inbounds pass and led 44-40 entering the fourth quarter. Baldwin went up by eight, and held on down the stretch.

The Knights pushed the top seed to the side and will play in the Southern States Athletic Conference title game Saturday against Life in Montgomery, Ala. The Knights railed 32-26 at halftime, and tied it at 54 with 7:22 left. MGSU gained some control and the margin cracked 10 with 2:21 left. Former Hancock Central standout and Georgia College transfer Jamal Taylor scored 24 points on an 8-for-13 shooting night, Trashawn Wilson with 17 off the bench. Milique Smith, a junior from Upson-Lee, racked up a 12-point/13-rebound double-double.

A bogey-free run ended after 24 holes, and Russell Henley had three in an eight-holes stretch, but he remains in contention at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.

The Stratford grad shot a 1-under for the second round and is tied for 10th with four others, four shots back of leader Jake Knapp.

The cut line was 5 under, ending the weekend for Sungjae Im, Harry Hall, Lucas Glover, Nico Echavarria, and Andrew Novak, among others.

Henley birdied the two par 5s, and two of his three bogeys were on par 4s. His tee shots were the issue on two of the bogeys, and his short game was off on two of them.
