Around/About Central Georgia

What goes around comes around: A Hatcher and Smart hook up again

          Perhaps it was inevitable.

Back in 2000, the first real live coaching job for Kirby Smart came when he was hired at Valdosta State by Maconite and Mount de Sales grad Chris Hatcher.

Smart made $8,000 that first in a typical do-everything role – and defensive backs coach - at a small school as part of a new and young coaching staff.

Slow-forward more than two decades later, and maybe Smart is repaying Hatcher for a hiring gamble that’s led to a legendary career.

Smart has hired Ty Hatcher, another gym-rat of a high school and small-college quarterback, to Georgia’s staff as an offensive analyst and quality control coach.

The young Hatcher, though, has a stronger resume than Smart had when he joined the older Hatcher.

Ty grew up in Alabama and played, albeit sparingly, for his dad at Samford. Chris Hatcher won the Harlon Hill Trophy, the Divison II verison of the Heisman, while at Valdosta State.

And at the age of 24, he’s now with his fourth SEC program, having spent at year at Alabama, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma.
