West Laurens leads area group in GHSA wrestling

West Laurens had the best finish of Central Georgia teams in the weekend’s GHSA state wrestling duals.

West Laurens beat Luella 45-35 in the Class 3A second round, but lost 39-38 to Troup County in the semifinals. The Raiders were then edged 42-39 by Heritage-Catoosa – which finished fourth – in consolation action.

Perry lost 41-31 to St. Pius X in the consolation round in Class 4A.

Upson-Lee beat Long County 42-34 to open consolations, but was knocked out 56-23 by Gilmer.

Rutland’s visit in Class AA ended in the first consolation match, a 72-6 loss to East Jackson

In Class A, Dublin lost its first consolation match, 533-20 to Brantley County, while Jasper County was topped 54-27 by Mt. Pisgah.

State champs: Class 5A, Creekview; Class 4A, ; Class 3A, Jefferson; Class AA, Rockmart; Class A, Social Circle.

The girls tournament is Jan. 25. The state traditional championships at the Macon Coliseum are Feb. 13-15.
